One Girl Revolution

I'm doing a photo shoot for my brother's band in a couple of weeks, and I need help with lighting. I have only used natural light so far, and now I need to get into some more professional lighting. I have a Canon Rebel XS, and no lighting other than the on camera flash (which as most know is not that great.) What would be the best kind of lighting for me to purchase? I don't want to spend over 100$, and I want the lighting to work well in very dark to light situations. Also, how moronic would it be for me to bounce a shop light off of a normal umbrella, or cover it with a sort of diffuser?
Thanks so much for your help.
We are planning on a good bit of outdoor shots, as well as inside of a movie theater (if we get permission.) and possibly inside a fairly plain building. How well do softboxes work for portraits of multiple people?
