Liberals, what do you base the assertion on that Iraq was an "illegal" war?

Illegal according to what body of law?
Tucking Idiot, There was only a cease fire in the first gulf war that the entire UN signed off on, we could have invaded anytime after Iraq broke the cease fire by firing on American and allied planes...
The UN Charter is not a "Body of Law"

The Geneva Convention is a treaty, which only applies to it's signatories.
Boss, I am not asking if the war was justified or not, or if anyone in particular agrees with it, I am asking what the assertion that the conflict was :illegal: is base don, what is the legal theory behind the assertion?

because the whole reason we where there changed several times.
First it was war on terror. When Osama was caught heading to Afghanistan it became "to find WMDs". when those weren't found other than what the inspectors already knew about, it became "to spread freedom and Democracy"(to people who hate us for our freedom? ummm duuuuhhh).
There is no UN Charter that justifies war based on spreading Freedom and Democracy.
That is only something that justifies death in the minds of right-wingers who believe in Augustine's Just War Theory, which is nothing more than justification for purging peope who don't think like they do, and justification for ethnic cleansing.

It was a non UN sanctioned invasion that was based on falsehoods. The country, congress and the world were lied to purposely. When the foundation of something has no credibility, the whole structure crumbles.

Because the US agreed to the UN charter among other international agreements that
specify the reasons when it is legal to invade another nation by force.

Invading Dar Four to prevent genocide would be legal.

How about the fact that we were attacked by an Afghanistan terrorist group and in response we invaded Iraq which had zero ties to the terrorist group and had no part in the attack?

Looks like Tucking beat me to it, with a link even. Ouch.

Try ten seconds of research with google next time to avoid the embarrassment.

There was no moral justification in attacking Iraq. We were not attacked by Iraq's military, nor were ANY of the 9/11 terrorists citizens of Iraq. None of our allies were attacked by Iraq. No Iraqi military units were in a position to be a direct and immediate threat to US or our allies. The Administration knew, had reason to know, or should have known, because they were informed by UN weapons inspectors that iraq was not in possession of WMD, was not expanding its nuclear program, etc., which later US forces inspections proved.

The Administration engaged in fraud through the use of perjured testimony and deliberately false information to obtain UN sanction for the invasion. By US law, any fraudulent activity is a crime. Using fraud to obtain an appearance of legitimacy is a crime which usually translates to illegal.
