LG G2x vs. HTC Sensation

Hey all,

My tmobile contract has ended so I'm in the market for a new phone (current phone is Nexus One). I am part of a family plan so I have to stay with tmobile (much cheaper than getting an individual plan with AT&T or Verizon).

I am trying to determine between getting the G2x now or waiting ~6 weeks for the HTC Sensation.

Any thoughts?

I have seen the tech reviews of the G2x, but wanted to also get some input from current owners. There's been some reports of people not liking G2x because of the forced bloatware, poor call reception/quality, inferior screen / halo affect occurring in the corner of phone.

What do you guys think?

I had a G2X but had to return it. It's a fast phone, had quadrant scores of 2570 on stock rooted phone. The problem was the screen, there was quite a bit of bleeding on it. There's a thread on our forum about that and several on XDA. I think I'm going to get either the Sensation or the Samsung S II.

Yikes, that's really unacceptable. Thanks for the post. I truly treasure my phone, and that would really bother me...

My only hesitation with HTC Sensation is that it's loaded with a non-stock UI. I'm not a big fan of bloatware, esp if it's crap that I don't have an interest in.

Does rooting allow one to remove to UI overlay?

You can just install a different launcher, ADW ot LauncherPro to get back to vanilla android. If you do that you will lose most of the functionality of the Sense widgets.

I would recommend the G2x over the Sensation. HTC recently started locking their bootloaders, meaning less modding support. On the other hand, the G2x already has nightly builds of CM7 out. The Tegra 2 is a stronger processor than the Snapdragon 1.2 dual despite it's slightly lower clock speed; this is due to Qualcomm continuing their tradition of not making a good GPU. That being said, if you can wait I think the Samsung Galaxy S2 should be coming to the states in a few months. That phone will blow all these phones out of the water. The Samsung Exynos 1.2 dual CPU is a monster, 1gb RAM, thinnest smart phone on the market, Super AMOLED+ screen (they got rid of the pentile display), and the first ever Android device with device level encryption.

I would agree with you except for the fact of the bad build quality of the G2X, LG is a fail, constant reboots and the back light bleeding. I'll agree the Samsung S2 will be a monster but from what I read it won't come until quarter 3 and HTC builds a quality product, the dev community will work around the locked bootloader.

LG does have a reputation of having a bad build quality in their products (not just phones)...

I am no in rush. My nexus one is fine. I have been out of contract since last November, and have been waiting for a good dual core phone. I thought the LG would be it...

The Samsung S2 looks really nice. I may wait for 3Q2011... anxiously...

The rebooting has to be a software issue.. No way is that phone going to have stock software very long if it's mine . I've heard of the backlight bleeding issue, but I've heard as many or more people talk about how awesome their G2x is. I'm guessing it's a quality control problem and there probably isn't as many people with that problem as it seems like from reading forums. And there is only so much you can do with a device with a locked bootloader and it takes a lot longer. CM7 nightlies are already out for the G2x, what about the HTC Thunderbolt?

If you're in no rush, the N1 is a very nice phone. I'm still rocking mine. I think we're in about he same boat, anxiously awaiting a Samsung S2. That phone looks like a monster and if the previous phone is anything to go off of, will have plenty of dev support.

My G2X is awesome, and I see no backlight bleeding. If you're worried about bloatware, definitely go with the G2X. It's VERY close to stock Android, with just a few added T-Mobile apps. There is already a CM7 build out there, and there is a recently leaked GB build as well.
