Let's say you want a second, small bike, something to work on!

I bought a 2006 Street Bob with a 95 inch upgrade for my "second, smaller" bike. Since my other bike is a 2010 Street Glide with a stage II 103 install that fits right???
 
I've been thinking a VROD would make a good second bike. They're fast, way different from a glide, and I see a lot of good low mile used ones in the $8k area.

I don't have that much cash though, so my current second bike is a 73 Honda CL350. I bought it years ago to mess around town on, and it's a good one to loan out to your friends that don't have their own bikes. If someone drops it, no one cries...
 
early 70's cb750. I built a hardtail chop out of one of these back when that was a common thing to do. This time I'd do it up as a cafe racer style rat bike.

Late 70s to early 80s unit Bonneville. Ugly stepchild of the Bonnies. Do it as a bobber, natch.
 
I wouldn't worry, lots own more then one brand here but HD's are the favorite. This is my wifes 05 1100 Classic we bought new and replaced with an 07 FLHRC this summer. It is not selling so think it just might be a winter bobber project.

OP, +1 on the ebay local search and see what comes up close to you. There will be a learning curve no matter what so just make sure it is something you like and see in your minds-eye what it could be.
 
You said inexpensive and easy to work on. I worked on this bike for 11 months bringing it back to original. Parts are available and are not expensive. 1977 Kawasaki KZ900 A5.
 
Funny you should ask. I'm trying to work a deal on a 1976 Triumph T140V Bonneville that needs work. I'm not sure if I would restore it or bob it.
 
+1 for sure! This is the best idea...in particular the CB750 if you'd like to minimize the PITA factor...and stay inexpensive (vs the Triumph).
