Let's say you'd like a second, smaller bike, something older, something cheap, something quick and fun to ride around town, something you can work on. Now let's say, as far as you know, you have no real mechanical ability, but you'd like to get involved, at a basic level, learn as you go, and make something out of something that runs, but could use a little work. What would you get, where would you start?

Go on Ebay and search "motorcycles" & sort by "distance : nearest first"....see what's close to you for sale.
You may be amazed what's for sale in your own town.

I'm thinking an EVO wide-glide. Why? The EVO is the only motor built during my life time that I have not owned. Why a wide-glide? I think they look cool.

I'll probably get blasted for this, but my other bike is an 1100 V-Star Classic, my wife has a 650 Classic. These are perfect around town scoots are are simple to work on. We go all over the place on them when she's not in the mood to be a passenger.

With little or no mechanical ability and a small budget I'd get a 650-750cc metric. Something from the '80s. Probably build a cafe style bike.
A 250cc dirt bike would also be a decent bike to wrench on and ride for fun.
Either way you could build a fun and cool bike for less than the cost of a basket case sportster.
