Let's say we gave ip address 192.168.10.2 IP(class C) and a wrong sub net mark.....?

i mean class C suppose to have a sub of 255.255.255.0 .what if we give another one?does the network still work?(it should work,i have a such network ).if it does why is there all class A,B,C,D things and subnet masks?
