Yes, perhaps even more so. English is the international language of science, and everyone who wants to practice science in countries other than their own (or sometimes even in their own), or publish in a major journal, needs a working knowledge of English. In fact, many of the largest and most prestigious organizations conduct their meetings and talks in English no matter where they are - the Max Planck Institutes in Germany operate in English.

I don't know if English is your first language (because the 'about' did not belong in that phrase), but if not, I'm sure you've seen your command of English come in useful.
