Les Diaboliques (1954): 4/5

Very good mystery film. Bit slow in places maybe, not a thriller by today's standarRAB but really has a shocker of an ending I didnt see coming  !

I disagree. It's so skilfully directed and acted as to be totally engrossing, atmospheric and suspenseful, at times even shockingly so. Today's 'standarRAB' rarely if ever yield any thrills for me!! I think it's a great shame that it's so difficult to see Clouzot's earlier, less touted thrillers of the 40s - particularly Le Corbeau - which by all accounts sound equally as ascerbic and as absorbingly twisted as this and The Wages Of Fear.

I agree it is suspenseful, made the ending even more shocking
Funny you would expect the Simone Signoret character to be the brutal husband's wife and Vera Clouzot (younger and more exotic) as the "mistress" not the other way round (IMO).

Great movie. if you want to know something creepy, the main girl in the film has a heart condition.....well the actress who played her died in real life from a massive heart attack aged just 46.

Life imitating art

Really? I didnt know that *Twighlight Zone*

The film also seemed Hitchcock like - IMO, now I'm curious to watch the film again (but not so soon) for clues.
The husband's wife in the film is attractive - she doesn't look particularly French, with the fan etc.

Hitchcock missed out on the rights to the Novel, and was most hacked off, the writers ( Boileau and Narcejac ) heard about this and offered him the book that Vertigo is based on.
