Hi, i'm new here and have been having some strange health issues lately. I was prescribed potassium, klor con m10. I've been taking it for two weeks. Yesterday out of the blue both of my legs started hurting mostly in my upper thighs and I have a little puffiness behind my left knee. "Leg discomfort" is listed as one of the serious side effects of the medicine. I have a call in to my doctor about it and I did not take the supplement yesterday and have not taken it yet today. My legs seem a bit better today though they are still very sore and bruised feeling to the touch. My question is has anyone else had this and what causes the leg discomfort with this medication? Why is it listed as one of the "serious" side effects? I am anxiously awaiting a return call from the doctor and am a bit worried about this.

Hi. I'm on 20meqs. of potassium a day as I just can't keep my potassium levels up. Potassium is one of those minerals that if it's even slightly too high it's a problem and slightly too low and it's a problem. Way to low or too high and it can be lethal...it affects the way muscles work, including the heart muscle. But on the good side, you usually get a lot of leg muscle problems before you ever get that bad.

My doc has my potassium levels checked all the time to make sure I'm not on too much. He also told me to have any other doc I see that if they are doing blood work...throw in a potassium level. But I've learned the warning signs of when to adjust things....muscle pains in my legs. If I'm off the potassium, I start it. If I'm on it, I stop for a few days. My calves hurt more than my thighs but both are a signal.

Glad you called your doc. You may need to have your level checked and dose adjusted. Had mine done on Monday. It's a pain but you can't live without potassium so you get used to dealing with it if it's a problem.

Do you know why yours was so low you had to take the supplements?

Hi, thanks for replying. My doc said to increase the dose i'm taking and see if my legs feel better. I just took my regular dose yesterday and they felt better. He wants me to go up from one tablet a day to two. I've never had anything like this before. The symptoms I was having fit for low potassium though. I don't know what caused it. It could be that over the summer my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had to have surgery, (he is doing great and cancer-free now) and it was a very stressful time. The doctor that did the surgery is 4 hours from where we live and we had to make that long trek several times and for a while there between the not sleeping and worry and driving. I wasn't exactly eating the best of diets. I'm feeling better now, i'm scheduled for an ECG on Tues. so am hoping that turns out ok. I have also been having some problems taking deep breaths but I think that is going to turn out to be anxiety. I have been doing breathing exercises and that seems to be helping there.
