Legal Question- Who would the car belong to?

So after a year of dating my boyfriend we had gone to a car dealership, I had been borrowing his car to get to work thats why we went. So we ended up buying a Nissan Xterra, the financial manager at the dealership got us a loan for the car through a local bank but the loan is in my boyfriends name not mine (the manager had decided to put the loan through with my boyfriends name not mine because my credit would've gave us a higher interest rate). The car salesman had us put both of our names on the title. So now I'm breaking up with my boyfriend. My question is since I have made all of the payments on the car and the car was meant for me to have so I can get back and forth to work who would have ownership of the car? Does anyone know what I could do legally to keep the car? I have made all payments, the title is in both of our names- I think I should be able to keep the car since it is my money that went into it. Are there any laws that would help me? I live in Montana if it helps, thanks.
Also my boyfriend said he would put my name on the loan, it's mainly his mother who is trying to talk him into keeping the car so she can drive it. If my names on the loan would that change anything?

Morally the car should go to you due to the fact that yes you have made the payments. but remember the financing is in his name, so basicly you did all the grunt work for him. Also since the title is in both your names then you both legally own the car. The only way the car can go to you directly is if he removes his name from the title. Remember though, he is financially responsible for it, i doubt he'll sign it over to you without having you take the loan in your name.

You will need to get your own loan for the car. If the title says "joe smith AND Jane Jones, you each have an equal interest in the title.

If it says OR you are in trouble.

Why don't you hiore a lawyer to smooth this through, it shouldn't cost you mor ethan an hours work, IF you can get a loan in your own name.
