Legal Question Landlord/tenant Dispute that was sent to collections?

Hi,

I am wondering what my steps would be to take in a landlord tenant dispute that has been sent to collections.

I have already written the collection agency a letter saying that the three of us dispute the charges after they sent us a collection notice.

The apartment complex we lived in sent us a bill for 988.92 for excessive wear and tear on carpet which we say was in no way excessive after 3 years of living in the place.
I asked numerous times about how old the carpet was and no one could provide me an answer.

Does the collections agency have to take us to court in order to receive a judgement that proves we should be held responsible?
Or do we have to take them to court in order for them to stop trying to collect this?
Or what else should we do?

Thanks in advance
Brian
As a side note our deposit was only $100 which they refunded to us. Why that is when they want money off of us I have no idea maybe Florida law?

I also have pictures of the place that the apartment people took. Does not show anything excessive other than normal wear for carpet that no one seems to know how old it is.

To me my most valid point to tell a judge would be the fact that no one can tell me how old the carpet is. All they tell me is the carpet lasts for 6 years and we lived there for 3 along with a dog (charged us $300 plus an additional $15 a month)
