Legal One Piece Streaming Canceled Indefinitely due to leak (update: uncancelled)

So what does this all mean? Is Funimation going to learn from their mistakes and continue with the simulcasts or are they going to abandon everything?

Jeez, I hope that "as a direct result of this illegal act, all U.S. and Canadian fans will be deprived of access to this great anime series for the immediate future." doesn't mean that the entire simulcast won't happen ever, or even worse.....Toei removing the rights to One Piece from FUNi entirely. I really don't want it to be the worst case scenario, because it would suck to no longer get legal access to One Piece completely forever and I was looking forward to more of the Uncut dub.

You'll notice, officially speaking, nothing official has been said by Toei at all. This has all been FUNimation's worRAB, meaning it could very well be FUNimation decision to take down all of the shows they have.

This news doesn't surprise me at all. It really doesn't.

Let me remind you that when One Piece was on Toonami, people were racing to be the first person to post an official episode talkback. So naturally in an attempt to be the first person to beat someone to the punch, we have this. And to add to his or her ego, they did it to an official company who is known for cracking down on fansubs and fandubs (as a matter of fact, the Funimation blog even did an entry on this division within the past month). We know people are seeing this illegally anyway so it was only a matter of time before someone was greedy enough to go ahead and do something like this. Right now, I bet Al Kahn is laughing his butt off over this childish act.

Also, the person leaked Episode 403. Even though I'm not a One Piece fan, I know we're not even close to that nuraber here in the US. Therefore, people should not even watch One Piece that far to begin with. It's a shame, however, that these people who do are vocally praising OP and probably the main reason the show is licensed to begin with. Nevertheless, they shouldn't spoil themselves and give fandubs/fansubs the ammo that lets them do such a thing.

Some good points have been made so far but as for what people should be doing: I told the Geass fans at the Adult Swim to put their money where their mouth is and support the company in response to the low ratings on AS. Sure enough, Bandai came out and said Geass was their highest seller. The people out there who are saying they are waiting for a One Piece sale before they buy should follow Ishtar's example and buy the DVD's.

Worst case scenario: The DVD's are discontinued and you're left with a "woulda/coulda/shoulda" sense of disappointment for not going through with it.

Best case scenario: People in a state of panic buy the show making One Piece one of Funi's top sellers and Toei/Funimation continue business as usual ... or better.

Now I'm not saying you should buy every One Piece set (though I doubt Funimation wouldn't mind if you did) but it's a better idea to let your wallet speak over a keyboard and mouse.

Well, this certainly sucks. Hopefully they manage to clear up the mess and get streams back to us.

Beyond that, I wish people would stop panicking about it. I havent seen this much doom and gloom prediction since the first days of the flu panic we had.

Your reading it wrong, not only are they starting from the first episode as well as uploading the latest episodes but unlike Viz FUNi is smart enough to upload the uncut dub along with the sub.

Basically, what Scirel said. This is a show that airs regularly in Japan, and the episode got leaked before it even aired in Japan. So basically anyone that was aware of the leak can watch it, mostly the English speaking countries.

If it was something like say the Venture Bros Episodes that were leaked, that one wasn't really a big deal since it was a cartoon that got leaked in its own country. One Piece, being an anime, is bound to more rules and regulations about digital distribution since licenses vary from country to country. After all, I think that TOEI and Fuji TV might be pissed off at the fact that One Piece didn't air in Japan first.

yeah except going 2 ep. a week means 195 weeks until caught up to japan. 4 years later japan would have 200 more episodes of one Piece anyway. Viz originally got through 100 ep. of naruto in like 3 or 4 months. Like 5 or 6 episodes a week and started where the dub let off.
Also as long as CN still airs Naruto on CNvideo on their website, Naruto probably is barred from showing their uncut dub online.

Also the manga thing has so many problems its not even funny, They should drop the idea quick, for starters shoasha (sp?) Jump is a WEEKLY magazine and Shonen Jump is a MONTHLY magazine, naruto never gets 4 chapters why the hell would One Piece! They would either fall behind in a week or annoy the japanese readers and air a chapter or two in shonen jump before japan gets to reaRAB it. At least the report mentions fall and technically deceraber 20th is still fall, so hopefully they finish the alabasta arc. Also when they say most recent chapter, they don't mean they would throw us right in the MIDDLE of an arc, right?

Interesting interviews are interesting

It's good to see FUNi respond to the situation and have an actual interview on it. I thought for sure that they weren't going to say anything and keep the matter hush hush but I'm glad to see them addressing it.

Though no new info on One Piece though. I wonder if the simulcast will ever happen now

(Yes, thank you for addressing the "upload it to the servers AFTER the episode has premiered" angle)
