I saved $15/mo by switching from Sympatico to an independent DSL supplier. Funny though, they haven't put their prices up in over two years while Sympatico and EV have.

That's the problem. EV got me as a customer by offering a significantly cheaper service but required a large outlay for hardware up front. The lower cost was touted as an advantage. Two years later, they want the same price as the cable company for the service, way before the hardware cost is recovered. I feel like I've been screwed by a bunch of two faced thieves.

and some are worse...my point being that just because the area is serviced by Bell as the ILEC, it really means nothing in terms of the quality of the connection you will receive.

With Bell Express Vu even if you sign up just for the basic you still have a contract for 12 or 24 months. They try to sign clients up for the longest term possible, I agree, but it's alos more beneficial to the client. A client with 1 year term pays for the install and doesn't get any deals on programming while a 2 years contract client gets free install with 6 months at half price.

I_want_my_HDTV, there was an error; some Legacy client got the message for the Genesis increase; this is why.

Jan 1998...no deals at all and have never received any offers EXCEPT for the dish repoint.

Sure, but everbody has the same agreement. It's just not applied to everbody. How can people with the same contract be subject to different terms and conditions when it actually comes down to the billing?

Scrooloose, that's exactly the way it is at the present. If I want to add a single channel, then I have to switch to the new package. No problem. Understood. Doesn't help Evu though as I'm not going to take a huge hit just for a minor programming change or to add the HD package no matter how attractive. As it stands now, to add the $10 HD pack would cost me an additional $360 per year. Fine. My decision is not to go that route. But if I wake up some day and find my programming has been cut off then that's ok too. I'll just take my business elsewhere. But that will be all my business.

Digital Standard $31
5 themes $20
US Superstations $5
2nd feed US networks $1
Total: $57 plus whatever your taxes are.

there might be the odd channel here or there that may be missing, but there will also the be several new ones you don't get...check the theme packs...remember, in the Super7, News was one theme, Learning was one theme...with the new programming, News & Learning is one theme...also, Networks was a theme in the old packages, and is now included in DS...so the new "basic plus 5 themes" is almost identical to the old "basic plus 7 themes".

My beef is paying for regular programming and subsidizing the masses with my money for crap SD programming . This is commuinism as all I want to pay for is HDTV channels ....The first company SAT, CABLE, IP Telco or Wireless company that offers this choice will get all my BIZ.

If I lived near the border in southern ON then free HDTV OTA would be my choice :)

again, the early adopter...hardware was very costly back then, not so much so now, hence the better promotions (install, programming credits etc).

the programming prices may have increased, but so has the selection...we didn't have HD back in '98...heck, back then, BEV used Anik to broadcast its services from...now we have 4 DBS satellites up there, with two more slated for the next two years.

I disagree with that, at least with respect to Rogers and Bell. With three products -- cable TV, internet and home phone -- I get 10% off the entire bill. Comparing apples to apples -- quoted rates for products, not discounted specials -- my internet is the same rate; my phone is cheaper; my tv product considerably richer for the same price range. Then I get 10% off that. If I had wireless, I'd get another 5% off TV and Internet and home phone as well as 15% off wireless.

The extra dollar bills stuffed into my pocket are more than "perception".

Further, I don't have to "do anything" to get the savings other than "enrol" with a phone call. If I change my mind on the two year agreement for the savings, the worst I pay is the discounts saved; there is no "penalty". Since I fully expect to subscribe to TV, Internet and home phone without interuption over the course of the next two years, I'm happy to take the savings and run.

On the larger point, I fully agree that early users pay more and get the benefits of the service longer. HD is a good example: the sets were more expensive two years ago; but then I've enjoyed HD TV for two years longer than someone starting now. I don't expect Sony/Bell/Rogers to "refund" me the difference in TV sets purchased today vs. two years ago.

^ and that is a business model some smaller ISP's decide on, unfortunately, many of them either go out of business, or get swallowed up by other smaller ISP's, as it is difficult to manage your business that way...some of them suffer from little to no redundancy and very limited capacity...since many of them run on very slim margins, upgrading the network or capacity is rarely done, and it can cause serious problems for their customers...the customers get angry, and go elsewhere, further complicating the money problem for the company, but fixing the capacity issues for them.

Effective April 30th, customers not in a term, who subscribe to the "older" programming packages will be subject to a $5 increase to their base plan (eg Locals).

Letters will be going throughout the month of March informing customers of the increase.

if you have Ultimate 7, you are a legacy customer...the selection that will be increasing is "Locals" which is your base package (much like Digital Standard is the base package with Genesis programming).

i moved from U7 to DS, PM, 6 themes and spend about the same money i did before...i did add HD though, so i did go up by $10, but the core package is really about the same price and i got all the newer channels that have been added.

After the $5 increase, it will be worth it for me to go to the new packages. Not that I am happy about it. Either way it will mean a large price increase over the past several months. The only up side is that I will get HDNet and can drop some programming. TMN is going after The Sopranos is finished (they have messed me around far too often with HD programming), along with a theme pack.

I will not be buying any new EV equipment. That money will be spent on "alternative" choices in future. The programming on Canadian channels is just getting too low in quality to watch anymore. Also, the HD channels have become too hacked up by bad simsub switching and poor technical quality on the Canadian HD stations. It's too bad, despite the high hardware cost, EV seemed like a good choice when I originally subscribed. Now, I just feel ripped off after spending $1000s on faulty PVRs, equipment and obsolete receivers. If things don't improve soon, I will sell my EV receivers and use the money for something else. There are lots of choices out there. I would rather stay 100% legal but I will be getting much less than my money is worth from EV in the near future. :(

i was on that until last fall.

i switched to:

Digital Standard: $31
Premium Movies: $16
6 theme packs: $25
Total: $72 (was $68 prior to Feb 1st).

i have since added HD and get all the newest channels.

Not true. For television, Rogers does NOT have any contracts except with respect to Better Choice Bundles -- the plan you can opt into and start saving 5% to 15% on your monthly recurring bill for TV, Internet, Home Phone or Wireless.

A number of promotions are pitched with "terms" but only BCB has a contract. Breaking the BCB contract is easy: you give back up to the amount of the savings -- there is no penalty and there are maximums so you can still end up in the black.

You can cancel any TV service with Rogers at any time, subject to a 30 day disconnect policy (which, I believe, also exists at Bell).

Yes, for SC, the policy is clear and applied to everyone in the same way.

What is a "system access fee"? Who pays it and who doesn't? I'll bet you can't give a link to the website showing an explanation.
