Leg pain

I am a 28 year old female and I have been having pain at the back of my left leg for 3 days now, its mostly at night and then comes back hours after being awake mild and then pretty bad later, I went to the ER last night and they gave me a Ddimer test that they said was normal and since it was no further testing is needed. I am not sure if I have any family history of blood clots, I never had one. I do smoke but not on birth control or anything. Should I just put out of my mind that it could be a blood clot since the test was negative? Its still hurting today. My leg is not red does not really appear swollen only a little in the back of my knee but I have big legs so I dont really see a difference. It just hurts... The doctor said he felt my pulses in my foot so he did not think there was a blood clot there but any information would be appreciated.

I have an arrythmia and it often sends me to the ER and the one doc that was there last night already thinks ill of me. I heard her talking about me to the others at the station, made me feel kind of bad so I know she did not take me seriously at all.

Well if you still have it if I were you I think I'd go back to the hospital or get your primary doctor to order an ultrasound test to make sure there's no clot. I unfortunately know a lot about this stuff since I've survived multiple pulmonary emboli (more than one pulmonary embolism at a time) from clots that started out elsewhere and moved to lung or formed in the lung on four separate occasions.

There are several autosomal dominant genes that are somewhat common. Factor V Leiden is present in about five percent of the US caucasian population and is autosomal dominant so if either of your parents had or has it you get it too. I have a background in public health and have long believed Factor V Leiden should be a condition screened for in newborns since it plus certain kinds of birth control increase the risk of forming clots it is a good idea to know you have it if you do.

Given the bad things that can happen if you do have a clot and it does break off and go to your lung I'd head back to the ER and insist they do an ultrasound. I'm not sure how foolproof a D dimer test is but I have read many an article suggesting that lab results are not infallible. Your leg doesn't have to be hot or red for a clot either, pain alone can be enough. For heavens sake if you start coughing up blood or get short of breath call an ambulance and get back to the ER quickly. Good luck. You do not want a pulmonary embolism. I can tell you from repeated experience they are no fun at all.
