Would a new mattress help night time leg cramps.??? I have had back pain for years and and have been diagnosed with arthritis with degeneration of the spinal cord. I have a bulging disc as well. I hate to spend the money if it is not needed but I am getting desperate. If I do need a new mattress, what is the best mattress for back issues???
Thank you,

Night leg pains can be from several causes. Low levels of magnesium, calcium, potassium or dehydration can all cause cramping of the legs at night. Poor circulation is another cause. Also cramping can sometimes be associated with the medication you are taking. No nerve pain medication is going to help if cramping is coming from other causes.

Sciatica pain is usually one of shooting or throbbing pain that radiates down the leg to the feet. So are you having cramps or radicular or referred pain from your back? Usually the cause of common leg cramps at night is not easy to identify as it is rather hit or miss.

Potassium deficiencies are easy to correct by simple eating fooRAB like bananas or kiwis. So first determine with your doctor what is the likely cause. Remeraber just because you have some degenerate disc disease does not mean that there isn't something else going on.

There are meRAB out of there that will work on your leg cramps at night. Have you tried any of them? If you need a new mattress, that's fine. But if your mattress is in good shape I would check into trying one of the meRAB first.

Thank you!! will try it tonight!! I would prefer that to a pill with side effects.

I always do my hamstring stretches at night when I am going to bed. I actually do them laying down. I also take valium to help stop muscle spasms. Usually though muscle cramps can be caused by a lack of minerals as in salt etc. So there are supplements available to help. I have trouble with dry mouth so I try to have plenty of water. Also if one drinks a lot of water you need to replace the salts in your body or it can cause more than just cramps. You can become very sick from having too much water in summer while perspiring when bush walking or jogging etc, without replacing the minerals.

I had night time muscle spasms for years. Sometimes as many as three at once! I recently started drinking 4oz of Tonic water with quinine, before I go to bed. I was advised to do this by my foot Doctor. Viola! no more muscle spasms.
