It has been over 30 years since I went to engineering school, but I think I still remember enough of what I learned to know that statement is impossible. Voltage is a constant. You can't use more or less than what is there. If you meant "one third the current" that might make sense, since Ohm's Law states that current is inversely proportional to resistance (I = E/R). To use one third the current, the resistive value of the element and ballast would have to be 3x greater than the light source it replaced.
 
I have noticed this with flashlights. Even if you get the LEDs that have the higher wattage (2 to 3 hour burn time vs 20+ hours), they look bright as hell when you look at them, and make decent work/flood lights, but if you go out into the woods/fields, the LEDs just don't seem to have the throw/range that standard bulbs have.

I like the LED flashlights though. The LEDs are more durable, and work better when its cold (batteries are weak in the cold), or when the batteries are running low.

My pop's trucking business uses LED lights to save on traffic violations due to marker/tail lights going out.

With ten LEDs in there, even if a couple go bad you can still make it home.
 
Don't know yet guys. Will try to get the vendor to loan/demo one if possible. I won't like the look on my bike but maybe those with the older faceted lens headlamp wouldn't mind.

I can't imagine the design of the LED lens not being able to project at least as far and strong as an incandescent unit. We shall 'see' ......
 
Well in the process of trying to get a group buy going I was going to try to get a demo. But since you are going to do the same, I am going to step out so it doesn't look like a bunch of hobos trying to get freebies. Feel free to try to get a group buy going in the process.
 
There is not guarantee that I can get my Truck-Lite rep to 'donate' one, but I will try. Monster, if you can try, don't let me block you from doing so. I am not in the dealership every day, so my chances of running into the rep is strictly up to my parts manager letting me know when he will be around.

I think that Truck-Lite hasn't even considered motorcycle as an avenue for their product, only heavy truck and trailer (where LED has an already strong following). RIDE ON
 
I am here in Iraq and we have literally hundreds of these LED lights from Truck-Lite. They are a huge supplier to the military. That is why they are so much. I will say they are impressive. Day and night difference to the regular bulb. The ones we have are all 24 Volt. I have been in contact with the company and tried to get a 12 volt shipped to me before my return to the states. The bad thing is they do not have an NSN for the 12 volt yet so........ They connect with the standard high, low and ground wires nothing else needed. We also have the HID lights and you really cant tell the difference from the LED to the HID.
 
No actually it sounds like you have an "in" so to speak. I was going to go into it totally blind. You would probably have a better chance at getting a demo piece and get a group buy going. When you get a chance to talk to the rep explain to him that there is a very big interest in using this light on bikes. Hell it might even open up a new avenue for the company.

The ball is in your court. Don't drop it.
 
I'd want to see a side by side with an HID before pulling the trigger. Their site doesn't say anything about being as bright as HID. I have the Kuryakyn 4 1/2" LED passing lites(one of their last pair) and they make my HID head lamp look almost yellow by comparison. But don't throw near the light as the old halogens did.
 
I honestely don't think they are going to be as bright as everyone is thinking they will be. They are bright to look at, making great tail lights, turn signals, marker lights, etc. but as far as light output, even HID can't compete with halogen, IMO
