I recently installed headers and i have noticed that when i have the windows down there is a fishy smell kind of like gas. when the windows are up it is not really that noticeable. i only smell it a lot at high RPMS but when it is just idling at a stop there is no smell! i think my headers might be leaking from the heads. i checked the res of the exhaust for leaks but it is all sealed and welded. is there any way to seal them without taking them off? (it took 8 hours to take them off! its a BMW) can i spray something around the head or put sum high temperature putty. it will be temporary with the putty.
it doesn't really smell like gas, it is more like if something died in my car.
i don't understand how the cat converter can be bad since i installed headers about 2 days ago and before that there was no smell. i doubt it is the cats i don't think all of a sudden they went bad.

i thought it was the headers since when i open the hood and smelled the headers i noticed the smell strongest right there. not were the cat was at.

when i put new headers on they always had a smell to them for awhile cause of grease and dirt they got on them from installing them and the paint will burn too. retorque the header bolts again on the heads. no way to putty, sorry. don't wait to retorque cause it will burn out the gasket if they came loose.

HI
If there is no noise under the hood the headers are not leaking.. a bad cat converter well make your car smell like rotting eggs. If they are leaking you have to take them off to fix. sorry.. 8 (
good luck
