Leaking Fuel Filter 2000 Toyota Avalon?

Hello,
Today I decided I would change my fuel filter. I was able to access the filter, remove it and replace it. I tightened it as tight as I could get it. When I started the engine fuel shot out of the bottom of the filter. I tried a few more times removing it and tightening it with the same results. I decided to put the old filter back on, and now it leaks at the bottom as well, but not nearly as bad. In my Toyota repair magazine it states that I should have a new sealant ring that would come with the filter set. I do not have one of these. My plan is to go to the auto parts store and buy some “plumbers” tape for car gas lines and wrap that around the parts that inserts into the filter, and attempt to find an o ring that sits inside the filter? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Craig
