Le Vie En Rose

its pretty awful actually - hence the not very good reviews

it misses way too much of her life out and why choose a stunning actress just to then have to 'ugly' her up?

stuff they miss out includes HER DAUGHTER DYING and her collaborating with and conning the nazis in the war, both extremely important events in her life

I've seen great reviews.

Anyway, I thought it was an incredible film. Probably up there as one of the best in a long time. It blew me away how good it was. Maybe since I've been a fan of Edith Piaf's helped, who knows. But I'm glad to have seen it.

on the whole they've been very negative

there is a much better film that just deals with her marriage to the boxer - a french one cant remember the name

I saw this film a couple of days ago and thought it was excellent.

Did we see the same film? There was a scene in the latter part of the film in flashback, where Edith was taken to the hospital to be told by the doctor that her daughter, dead in bed, had meningitis. They certainly never left that out of the film.

So wanted to see this film.

But no cinemas seem to be showing it in the South West, despite it being on every advertising hording on all the main rly stns in Devon & Cornwall.

Annoying!

Why such a limited release?

Did a search and found this thread!

I've only just seen it as it wasn't in our town so I waited for the box set on DVD.

A good film but brilliant lead performance by Marion Cotillard. I know bits were missed out, but if you were to do everything the film would have been 24 hours long. for what it was it was clever, but the central perfomance was amazing and well worth her golden globe award and todays bafta nomination. Oscars next I think. And the box set had the CD in and a lovely score that really tugs at the heart strings.

I dont chime in all that often but I thought that this film was incredible, Marion Cottiard gave an outstanding performance. The last scene particularly (which included Non Je ne regrette rien) was just breathtaking. She deserves every award she is nominated for!

A not especially good film rescued by the music and performance by Marion Cotillard. While I have no problems with films which don't run chronically, this film chopped up her biography and mixed it up so that many times it wasn't clear just which crisis in her life had just occurred. To miss out the war years of any French person is dubious and begs question of what they did. In this case, I felt it worked against EP. She was portrayed as largely unlikeable, though gifted, and to have shown her war activities would have widened her interests. (As in, capable of caring about something other than herself - not saying this is true, but it is the impression given by the film, especially when the death of her child was only given a coda.)

The things they cut out, and the muddling of the narrative only served to distance the audience from EP.

Congratulations to La Mome/ La Vie en Rose winning 2 oscars! (Lead Actress and Makeup)

Really glad Academy chose Marion. I think it was an absolutely amazing performance and thoroughly deserved the oscar!

One of the best winners in years I think!

That would certainly put me off watching this movie.

I like a film to portray the character in full. And especially if it is a true story.

I think I might prefer the other earlier film mentioned by a fm here, than this, if it gives a truer and more accurate account of her troubles with her dying daughter and her early years during the war etc.........

Surely, these very important perioRAB of her life, if they were shown more fully, would at least allow the audience to judge her more accurately and perhaps more sympathetically?

It sounRAB like they have missed out too much of the character to me....and although I haven't yet seen it, it already seems flawed and off putting. :(

I tend to agree, the film was quite muddled and it was difficult to keep track of which period of time they were dealing with.

Having said that, this film is worth watching if only for the music and for the absolutely outstanding performance of Marion Cotillard who actually became Edith Piaf throughout the film in a similar way to which Philip Seymour Hoffman became Truman Capote. I also felt that she came over as quite sympathetic despite the fact that she wasn't a particularly likeable person.

And as an Edith Piaf fan, the music was just excellent.

I thought it was an excellent film and Marion Cotillard deserved her Oscar. The transformation from young girl to the broken shell of a person ravaged by disease, alcohol and drugs was played brilliantly.

I didn't have any problem following the story, it was made quite clear what time period we were watching though it did move back and forth a lot.

Don't be put off until you have seen it.

My wife got it as she loves Edith..I wasn't as sure as I wasn't a fan.

Yes the film is bitty.

But we have now watched it many times, listen to the Cd all the tine and cheered Marion's oscar.

My wife says she has not been so effected by a performance in years..and we watch ALOT of films.

So watch and then decide....do not be put off. she deserved that oscar. 110%.

Marion Cotillard was *fantastic* - that can't be denied.

I think a little less muddling, and she would have been more sympathetic (i.e., integrating the death of her child earlier in the narrative, etc.). It is things like that which I thought didn't serve her performance well. But a wonderful, wonderful performance it was, which thoroughly deserved all the plaudits she has received.

(And I loved her dress at the Oscars!)

Finally got to see this movie last night.
I agree with alot of the comments positive and negative.
I would have to say for me overall, I would recommend it as a movie. Marion Couillard is phenomenal, and I too felt the performance was sympathetic.
The music obviously is the star of the film.

What a tragic life she had, perhaps parts were omitted and I am not intrigued into watching another movie of her life to see her War story. I felt really touched by the film and although it was a bit choppy in places, I liked how it was done for the most part. Definitely worth watching.
