A not especially good film rescued by the music and performance by Marion Cotillard. While I have no problems with films which don't run chronically, this film chopped up her biography and mixed it up so that many times it wasn't clear just which crisis in her life had just occurred. To miss out the war years of any French person is dubious and begs question of what they did. In this case, I felt it worked against EP. She was portrayed as largely unlikeable, though gifted, and to have shown her war activities would have widened her interests. (As in, capable of caring about something other than herself - not saying this is true, but it is the impression given by the film, especially when the death of her child was only given a coda.)
The things they cut out, and the muddling of the narrative only served to distance the audience from EP.
