laying with a bad back

In general, avoid laying on your stomach. When on your back, place a couple of pillows under your knees. This relieves stress on your lower back. When on your side, place a pillow between your knees. This helps keep your spine aligned to relief stress on it.

I hope this helps,
Emily

My pain prohibits me to lay on my stomach or either side. When I am on my side pain shoots down the leg that is on top. The only position that is somewhat pain free is to lay on my back with a pillow or two under my knees.

Another thing you can try is lying in a recliner, it seems to help me a little more anyway. Or, you can even try a mattress genie, which is a blow-up pillow you put at the head of your bed. You lay on your bed and start the blow-up pump and it actually raises the head of your mattress. But again, you have to lay on it while putting in the air, otherwise your top mattress may slide down the bed. I got one before my spine surgery and even though I still had lots of pain, it certainly helped me more to be able to get out of bed.

Laying flat on your back is good with a pillow under your knees so they are bent. But important part....NO pillow under your head! You can use a hand towel rolled up and put under your neck, but flat back is best with no pillow under head. :)
