Alright.
After a week messing with my T3, I've understood that I really really need a launcher. The ones that seem the most popular are Zlauncher and LauncherX.

Which one do you suggest me to get? Pros and Cons?

Let's pretend I buy LauncherX and then decide I want to replace it with ZLauncher. Can I easely delete it without changing any other software or is it a mess? Same question for vice verca.

I have used both. I prefer ZLauncher because you can get skins that allow you to put tabs on the bottom. It also has many more features such as trash can which is akin to Windows Recyle Bin. It also has a very good file manager program which is similar to FileZ but I still run both LauncherX and it on my machine because of slight differences.

LauncherX's original developer, Bozidar Benc, passed away tragically last year. As such it's uncertain as to the long term support for the product.

You also have the option of MegaLauncher. Which is a huge program but I don't like it because it's too complex.

And to answer your question: it's easy to delete any of the add on launcher's or simply exit them and then return to using the default Palm launcher. You can actually have both running on the device to where you can switch back and forth.

But to clean them up and remove them in favor of one versus the other is very simple. You can either delete one by using the other launcher or by returning to the Palm Launcher and having it delete the program.

I think you'll find that most skins and other backgrounds are available for Zlauncher then compared to any other launcher.

Two questions.

1. You say that to delete one, I can simply access the second one. Does this mean I can't have both launchers at the same time installed? I see you said that you have both so I presume that it's possible...

2. In Zlauncher manual, it says: DO NOT remove the system launcher from ROM, or you will DESTROY your handheld! ZLauncher IS an enhancement to the system launcher; it IS NOT a replacement for the system launcher

What does that mean? Does this mean I can't "delete" it? Do I have to uninstall it? Don't want to crash because of it :p

You can have both Launchers installed at the same time. However, you'll need to be carefull when installing because both will try to become the default launcher upon start up and you could have a problem. When installing both just be certain to tell ZLauncher not to be the default launcher as well as LauncherX until you've settled on one or the other.

As Dwinget points out, don't delete the default launcher - but you'd have to have JackFlash in order to do that since the default launcher is in ROM.
 
I see! They meant the default launcher! I thought they were talking about there own launcher.


I installed both launchers and having fun with them. I really really hate the original theme of Zlauncher. I beleive Launcher X original theme is much much easier to understand. I'll check themes later today.

As for the default one, none of them asked me to become the default one. If I'm in one of them and I close then open my palm, I come back in that launcher.
If I'm in the default launcher, that's where I come back after opening my palm. :\
 
I have considerable experience of running both ZLauncher and LauncherX on a Palm Tugsten T2.

LauncherX is graphically sharper. It is quite versatile but I found that it was quite unstable when used in conjunction with Jackflash and resulted in many fatal errors. After reinstalling all my software for the third time I switched to ZLauncher.

ZLauncher is not as good looking as LauncherX and it took me a long time to find a skin that I liked. However, it is much more customisable than LauncherX and has some other features that, in my opinion, make it an absolute must have.

The first is that it enables you to run most applications from a memory card, thus freeing up RAM. The second is that it has it's own built in file manager which is extremely good.

I still run a lot of applications from ROM using Jackflash and have never had any stability issues using ZLauncher. I highly recommend it.

Seems Zlauncher is the top dog right now in terms of features and support.

I have used LauncherX since it came out and it has NEVER crashed on me! That says a lot for the stability and programming expertise that went into it.

What about Mega Launcher ? I dont know Launcher X , but I prefer Megalauncher to ZLauncher, but that may be just because I am a newbie with Zlauncher.
Any opinions, advantages etc about these three launchers ? Or are there even others that are good too ?

I wasn't going to comment last week, but I just can't stand this.

Thanks to John for providing clear links to choices available for people. Always nice to deal with some sort of cohesive"listing" if possible.

However, NEITHER of those lists note the best launcher of all - 167k fooprint including TealMaster -- and that's TealLaunch (67k os5 "super hack"). No "1MB" required, but then no "cartoon characters," either.

Invisible, powerful, fast, launches DAs as well, completely customizable and no 1MB footprint or "skins" to hassle with.

Each button can have four functions, combinations yield another couple of dozen launches, graffiti strokes about another 100, and a popup list - the bottom entry on which I have "ScreenButton" - which launches 24 other apps with a finger tap and is FREEWARE.

If I couldn't have T/L, I wouldn't OWN a Palm. I swear by it that much. Opinions vary and launchers are "personal;" however what I wanted was SPEED in launching (if I wanted) 10 specific apps from any number of separate menus in 5 seconds. That may sound silly, but when you're walking along and can enter info in several different apps on the "way to the door," it becomes a great timesaver. Well, I got it! I can also "power-on" to 15 apps with ONLY buttons, and I haven't NEARLY exhausted the possibilities.

I would urge you all to at least take a look and a trial before deciding on a so-called "ultimate behemoth." Just my 2 cents.
 
You are right about behemoth. LauncherX uses 461K or RAM on my Zodiac2. I hesitated to switch to Zlauncher because it needed more than double the RAM of LX. ... and I still get cool skins, tabbed interface, and memory card management.

Z-Launcher is by far the better of the launchers. Keep in mind people also like PocketSensei's Silver Screen. I don't. Zlauncher is a little more complicated but nothing you can't figure out.

I love how you can put your own background on it so easily and other neat features.
