Last year I purchased a really nice 24-speed bike. I have a question. Can you help?

As I'm in my mid-50's, I have fond memories of riding my bike every day as a kid. In those days, everybody rode sitting straight up...instead of leaning forward like most people today.

A few months after I purchased it, I switched-out the handlebars to help me sit up straighter...but..alas...I still lean forward some.

Would I be crazy to replace the handlebars (again) to the type that would allow me to sit-up straight?

I'm just a casual rider....not competitive....and I know I would be more comfortable.

Nah, pete, you wouldn't be crazy. You've identified yourself as a casual rider, so you'd be foolish not to take advantage of a simple bike modification to increase comfort.

Riding position is dictated by hand position. With your hands higher and closer toward your body, you'll be more upright. Simply raising your bars can often do the trick. With an older "quill" type stem, this is a quick adjustment. With a modern threadless stem setup, stem replacement can sometimes be necessary.

There are a number of bars available, most of them of early origins, that are specifically designed to put you in a more upright position. Look for bars that fall under the names of albatross, dove and moustache among them. And be aware that some bars may not be compatible with the i.d. of your current stem. Shimming or stem replacement may be necessary.
