Last House On The Left

I over heard a girl at work discussing this new horror film out that looks worth watching. I said that is not a new film and is or must be a remake of the cheesy 70's film, classic though in its time, one of the pre banned horrors.
Anyway would love to know from anybody who actually goes to watch this, what it is like? Try though to watch the original first.
In fact does anybody know where you can watch the infamous banned scene with the ripping out of the intestines?

I actually watched it a few weeks ago (don't ask how :o) I thought it was pretty good. There are some changes from the original, which are generally good changes. It has the girl who plays Becca in Superbad (sorry don't know the actresses name.) The performances are all pretty good and as long as you don't expect groundbreaking material and you are a horror fan I'd recommend it.

But definitely see the original first.

Original owns this remake,i didnt find krug or any of his gang as menacing as david hess in the original,if u have seen the remake trailer theres no need to see the movie as it gives away the ending, kinnda stupid of whoever made the trailer, worst thing about the movie is the fact that

one of the girls survives

see the original 1st its a much better movie and very shocking in parts.

Ps mistygirl,u can view the full uncut version of the original on youtube, itll prob get taken down soon so id see it while u can.it has all the missing scenes.

Wes Craven's isn't even the original film, the original is Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring(thought obviously not gory). I've yet to see the second remake but I like the look of it and will no doubt see it.

I think my VHS from America of the film had that intestines bit in, I remember intestines pulled out anyway. Have no idea about the dvd releases.

Last House isn't a direct remake of the Virgin Spring - Wes Craven was inspired by that film though.

I'm sure that on the new uncut DVD the intestine scene is in it.

The US dvd was uncut.
The most recent 3 disc UK version was its first appearance uncut on dvd in the UK.
Even the originally banned 80's video was not completely uncut.

I think Craven was trying to get some credibility for his cynical cheap drive in movie when he tried to say it was based on The Virgin Spring.

He needed to excuse it's gratuitous nastiness when he suddenly became mainstream in the 80's with Elm St.

It's definitely inspired yes and in my eyes a remake but in a totally different direction, just saying it's not that original for the people holding it up as the original.

I'm sorry, but it's utter utter crap. Poorly acted, poorly written, incredibly misplaced comedy interludes, abysmal characterisation and cinematography that has the artistic credibility of a soap opera.

Ordinarily a film with the above flaws would be saved by copious amounts of nudity, sex or violence, and actually it has very little of those either considering it's a film about rape. And when the revenge eventually happens, it's so convenient, quick and bloodless that it is in no way comparable to the extremes of the rape scene which just highlights that the sole purpose of the film is to show women getting raped (like the similarly-wretched video nasty stablemate I Spit On Your Grave.

There really is nothing to commend it at all. The remake, however, is marginally better, although that suffers from a horribly formulaic third act.

See The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for more details on how low budget but artistically valid horror films can be made by people that actually have talent :)

The original isn't poorly acted. Indeed, some of the criticism derives from people thinking it was more real than it was. They reacted as if David Hess really was a rapist and killer. I felt it hard more artistic merit than its fellow video nasties; it showed cruelty and banality in an unusually stark and honest way, that makes it comparable to, eg, Irreversible or Funny Games.

It's also innovative. For example, it is the film which introduced chainsaws to the horror genre. It predated The Texas Chainsaw Massacre by a couple of years.

Yes I know, I wasn't disagreeing that Last House on the Left was the first to use a chainsaw... I just love watching it used in Evil Dead more, hence me been silly saying he rules and so on.

If you have seen both versions of this movie.....which one do you prefer.

1972 release...pee scene (not in 2009 release)
1972 release.. intestines (not in 2009 release)
1972 release..cops & chickens scene (not in 2009 release)

probably more just cannot remember.

Me personally i prefer the 1972 original.

To make it fair you should have named some scenes from the 2009 release to compare with those of the original release. Also your name kind of gives it away.

Not surprising that the pee and intestines are not there as these were the 2 scenes that were usually cut or got the film banned in the first place.
