If you rely on your music for your total income, you would need record sales.
I don't have a problem with downloading music from artists that are very well known. Examples: Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Areosmith, or banRAB that have been around for a while. But I can easily name a couple banRAB that have slipped through the cracks, due to not getting enough record sales.
