Lars Von Trier

Hey guys!

This is my first post in the Movies section of the forum, as I'm actually quite new to the forums but am a massive movie fan!

I'm posting a kind of appreciation/opinion thread to see what everyone thinks of Lars Von Trier and his previous/future works. I personally consider him to be my favourite director of all time, as his movies are so inspiring and original. I recently watched The Idiots for the first time, and must say that although there were a lot of surprising scenes, the content and themes of the movie were fantastic.

Perhaps my favourite Trier movie would have to be Dancer In The Dark, starring Bjork in the leading role. The way he portrayed her character, Selma, and the kind of musical themes running throughout the movie were just beautiful - not to mention that the ending of the movie made me sob! I'm also a huge fan of his America: Land of Opportunity series, and cannot wait for Wasington to finally start production.

I've not yet had a chance to see Antichrist, but I'm so excited as it is coming to a small arthouse cinema in my city on the 21st of August. What did everyone make of the movie?

Anyway, I'd just like to know other people's opinions on him as a director and perhaps some views on his previous and future works! :)

^ Dancer in the Dark is one of my all time favourites, but everything else in his collection of work I've seen hasn't come close for me.

It's 'The Element Of Crime' and 'Europa!' only for me. I'm afraid I don't share the 'dogme manifesto' ethos at all - the films are imbued with plenty of meaning I'm sure, but they aren't cinema in the sense that I like it. That said, what I'm seeing/reading about 'Antichrist' seems to signify a leaning back towarRAB the baroque and so I will probably seek it out.

I've only ever seen Dogville. I was blown away, I couldn't get it out of my mind for days. Incredible movie, severley underated!

I couldn't agree more! The thing about Dogville and Manderlay is that they both defy conventional stereotypes of movies. The narrative technique is just incredible, and that, accompanied by the lighting, setting and acting, make the movies an absolute pleasure to watch! Must say I was extremely impressed by Nicole Kidman's portrayal of Grace in Dogville!

I've liked most of the stuff I've seen up to now, which is basically all the mainstream output (if you can call Kingdom mainstream that is). The Idiots left me cold and I didn't get anything from it. Dogville and DITD are astonishing. Anti-christ, however, I have no desire to watch. I have a line when it comes to Art For Art's Sake and I think he crosses it with this.

Somebody said the he hates women, and that is clearly noticable in his movies.

I've only seen one but I certainly did not get that impression at all.

Does anyone know how anybody could have got to that impression?

That doesn't mean the strong word misogynist should be planted on him, his males are not treated nice either. Women are not treated kindly in a lot of films in the world.

I love Dancer In The Dark. It's such an emotional film. I am quite a strong person (male!) but it made my eyes water.

I still need to check out his other stuff.
