Lark Rise To Candleford Series 3

I've been watching the old "Lovejoy" series and tonight I'm watching an episode from the third series called "Loveknots" that has Nadim Sawalha in it! Too cool! :D

I dont think Larkrise should be viewed too strongly on the basis of historical fact or what we might expect to find. Its essentially soft focus escapism and does what it does brilliantly. Its rare to see a relationship triangle such as Laura/Fisher/Daniel, where the boundaries are holding hanRAB and occasional embraces and I think this respectable reserve is a huge part of its appeal-largely because you dont find it anywhere else.

Congratulations to the cast and crew for the not inconsiderable achievement of a hit show over three years against very strong oppostion. Its a little sad that next years series has been pruned.

Oh please, for the love of God, don't let Laura end up with Daniel. He's a lovely chap but he don't half make her dull; Bringing Fisher back has proven that emphatically.

In the two scenes Laura and Fisher shared there was far more passion, character and entertainment than there has been all season long with Daniel. This programme, as much as I love it, has a habit of disappointing me as far as the romantic storylines go (I'm still secretly weeping for Dorcas and Timothy :o) so I won't be getting my hopes up, but I think I'd prefer Laura alone if it was a choice between that and Daniel.

Oh Minnie, how I love thee. When she first appeared last season I really couldn't stand the character and now I think she's absolutely lovely. I hope she gets a happy ending.

I'm with the majority of you as far as Sydney goes. While I don't actively dislike him, he's just there, doing nothing of importance. It doesn't help that he's a constant reminder of JD, a character I'm none to fond of

Anyone else want to put in a petition to get LRTC writers to write a Minnie/Alf spin off? They would make a great couple to concentrate on once the main LRTC story finishes.

I just had a look through the Gutenberg online edition, and Flora Thompson really did write about the money being in chancery. Whilst anachronistic at the time, maybe it was a phrase that people just kept on using. Whenever a train's late I still moan about British Rail, and I wonder when the GPO is going to fix my phone line.

That song ended up getting right on my wick. And Robert getting in a strop again. Ho hum.
I still watch this show, but I definitely think it's lost its way a little.

I always liked the behind-the-scenes stuff, because it gives people a chance to see just how much work goes into producing something like Lark Rise.

I don't think it spoils the magic, I think, if anything, people appreciate the series more.

Once an episode proper starts, the story will pull you in and you forget about the crew standing there in waterproofs with coats for the actors just out of shot. :)

ok so i'll jump into the Pearl-Ruby speculation-

It had never even occured to me that Pearl could be Ruby's mother. I can see how that scene could come across this way, but I still think it can be read differently. We have seen Alf step up and take care of all of his siblings in a very parental sort of way. Especially for a young child (someone under say 5, for Alf this is Patience) the sibling taking on the role of parent is bound to take on some deep feelings as well.

Pearl and Alf could be very similar then. Pearl would be a young person who has seen her world fall apart, with the death of her mother and the father leaving. She has done her best to raise the younger sibling well and to rebuild a stable world, similar to Alf getting the Arless home back. Then the new world threatens to fall apart again when Ruby got measles and nearly died.

I think her feelings probably were very strong, and even could be labled maternal, without her actually being Ruby's proper mother.

On a positive, in the book doesnt dorcas hand over the post office to laura? well if they follow the book and do this, then dorcas will most likely marry or die, and i dont think the show could survive without dorcas so im hoping she marries. I know they dont religiously follow the book but maybe they will follow the general overview.

I keep changing my mind about who dorcas should end up with, when watching season 1, i want her to end with sir tim but watching season 2 its JD, hopefully she will end up with someone and soon.

I thought tonight's episode was very sweet and very funny. Thomas was on great form and Minnie was adorable. Alf should grab her while he's got the chance. Good to see Dorcas regain some of her old joshing style, although she did seem to suffer some qualms of conscience about her teasing of Thomas.

It sounRAB as though the drama is being racheted up a notch or two for next week. I've not been terribly gripped by Laura's love life until now but perhaps having her torn between two loves will provoke a more passionate response.

Another agricultural comment: they hadn't invented selective weedkillers back then, so the field would have been colourful with corncockles, poppies etc. I am sure there is an organic farmer out there somewhere who would have let them use an authentic-looking field. :)

We used to sing "The Keeper" in music class at primary school in the 1960s. Quite a good work song, like a sea shanty with the work leader singing the verse and the rest answering him. They should never have let Twister take over that job though - his voice is too high. :p
