Larger than average head

Hey everybody

So, I'm a 16 year old male and for as long as I can remember, my head's been huge compared to other people's. I've measured the circumference and it comes to 23.3 inches, which is really big. I don't so much mind having a large head but I dislike the shape and height. The top part of my head sort of curves outward (when viewed from the front) and my forehead is pretty big too. Is there anything I can do to make it look smaller. Also, is there any surgery that can make your head smaller? I guess there isn't, but I haven't bothered to research enough.

Hi Demoman, and welcome to the HealthBoards.

You are right in the middle of a huge growth period, that leaves most of us with some feature or another, that is either too big, too small, too short, too tall. When it comes to head size, we are all different. You will be growing until you are 25 years old or so, and in that time, things will even out. In the mean time, you might try hair styles that compliment your face. Focus on your talents and interests, rather than your body. Filling that beautiful head you have with knowledge, humor, passion and understanding, is the best use for your head. One thing I have learned after years of working with teenagers, is that every one has some issue that they are self conscious about. Even as adults, we can look back and remember feeling out of place sometimes. It is all a part of growing up, to accept and love yourself, just for being you. I hope this helps a little.

I just measured my son's best friends head, he is 15, and his head is 26"! My hubby's head is 24", and he is 6'4" tall, and it fits him perfectly. I know it's hard to go through these changes, and there is no real number that will ever represent "normal".

For now, get few cool hats, a good haircut and put a big smile on your face. That makes any size head it's best!
