Laptop volume control and media buttons not working?

I have a Toshiba laptop that has little media buttons (play, stop, skip etc) on the keyboard that used to work with windows media player. For some reason they are not working anymore; neither is the volume control wheel at the front of the computer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! (in laypersons terms please..i'm not too techno-savvy) Thanks
