Landlord wrote "refused to sign" on lease?

My ex boyfriend and I rented an apartment together. I moved out, and when the lease ended, he renewed it month to month. Now, I wasn't notified of this, but they wrote "refused to sign" next to my name, and renewed it with me on the lease. They have my number, and they had a forwarding address, didnt' tell me anything. They then smack my ex for carpet replacement fees (saying the carpets were soaked in cat urine, which is complete bull) when he moved out. So, there's a bill for $1300 against both our names. In Oregon, is it legal for them to expect me to pay for this when they didn't levy the charges until AFTER he moved out a month after he renewed the lease and they (as i see it) essentially forged my signature? I'm pretty sure they can't do this, but I want to know if anybody else has heard of this crap.

I think if you were both on the original lease, and he kept the apartment, it still goes on you. All he did was renew the original lease that you had previously used. Unless you actually informed the apartment office yourself that you had moved and were not renewing YOUR part of lease. Most leases renew automatically as month to month unless you tell them you're moving, and they usually require a set time frame of notice. And you can't say that you expected your boyfriend to inform them because it was your responsibility.
