I need help finding a website or a phone number regarding Landlord/Tenant Laws in the state of Missouri. I resently began the process of moving and now my old landlord is trying to hold my possesions even though we had a verbal agreement and a contract was suppost to be written up for me to sign regarding our agreement.
The landlord knew I was moving due to their unwillingness to fix the electrical problem that almost burned the house down and fried my computer, tv and dvd player. I owed them 1 month rent and that was to be paid after I got settled in at my parent's place if the computer was fixable, which it was. I was leaving them a working refridgerator that I had purchased for the house and never recieved repayment for but that too was suppost to be covered in the contract that was to be drawn up.
I told the landlord that I would not be able to do the move all at once and that I would have to make one last trip a couple weeks after the majority of the move and they were
fine with that.
When I went back for the last load, the house was padlocked and I was told that I was not allowed to get the rest of my stuff, most of which belongs to my kids and fiance(currently deployed to Iraq).
I know I was stupid for starting the move before the contract was in my hands, but besides the repair work, I have had no trouble with the landlord prior to this and all other agreements had been kept, so no lectures please.
They are members of a Landlord's Association but that has provided little help in the matter and since it is a civilian matter the cops won't get involved. I have several witnesses to the repairs that needed to be done that weren't and was willing to pay the month that I owed.
All I want is the rest of the stuff from the house. Any help would be appreciated.
