Lab Numbers Affected by Dessicated? Metformin?

We've all heard of the dessicated or natural hormones to supplement thyroid meRAB and that don't require a prescription. Anyone tried them, and how do they affect your tests and your functioning?

Another question, does Metformin affect just your labs, just paper, or also your thyroid function? I don't think these questions have been discussed much if at all.

I don't know abut Metformin but I would tend to avoid any OTC desiccated thryoid suppliments. They are not regulated as to potency and you do not know what you are getting.

Everything I read recommenRAB you go with prescription desiccated thyroid and the brand of choice these days is Nature-throid or Westhroid. Armour recently reformulated and there are many, many complaints about it not working well.

Hello, I have been on high dose of Metformin and then Janumet ( metformin also) for over a year now. I have Hashimoto's and Insulin resistance. I saw no change in my thyroid nurabers at all after taking the Metformin. My cholesterol dropped and I felt 100% better. Many of the symptoms I thought were from my thryoid were actually from my insulin resistance. But it did not seem to affect how much medication I took for my thyroid. Hope that helps.I take 4 Grains of Armour daily. After getting my thyroid and Insulin resistance under control and finding out I had some dietary issues I now feel great and have lost 30 pounRAB too. All is good. I have been to ND's, MD's, Endo's, you name it. It takes a while to find a Doctor you like and who really knows what he/she is doing.

THANKS for your replies. I may need to consult with you more later. I'm 73, been on thyroid since my teens, dessicated sheeps' at first, and I wonder why they no longer have that? Naturethroid and Westhroid I know about and wonder if they're swine or cattle derivatives, would swine flu ever get into them, where to get them in SE Mich. and like that.

It was probably more than a year after my metformin was increased to four pills a day, 500's, that my labs started going haywire, TSH too low, frees well within range at levothyroxine 300, until I pointed out that they were in range, since that Doc was only looking at TSH. Since then different places are claiming T4 is way too high, etc. Current Doc has admitted I have stalkers, husband's childhood rivals who never liked it that I was on that medication, but it may be the metformin. Usually at night I take a cinnamon capsule, from a health food store, so last night I did an experiment, left off one of the metformins and took two cinnamons. Even FELT BETTER within a short time, and this morning. Maybe metformin doesn't even agree with me.

Anyway, if I can find a Doc that prescribes dessicated, would my dosage be about the same, or is it a little more effective than the synthetics? I'm hardly ever sick since starting the levothyroxine several years ago, had had some fibromyalgia because the gov't "tightened" the potency of another brand. Recently mail order sent the wrong brand and I've had muscle pain again, irritability, other symptoms, feeling bad. Current Doc can't seem to remeraber, tho I've told him, by this age a patient's been through it all, cutting a pill every two weeks if labs are a little off, etc.
Wrote my prescription wrong, etc. I know it's hard to find someone. Only mentioned the supplements you can get w/out prescription in case of not finding a Doc who prescribes them and they're to supplement if your dosage gets cut so you can't even function, I think. Thanks again.

P.S. Raw diet. I'll look that up. I have allergies too, and the pills cause fast heart beat sometimes. Checked it at several stores that have those machines the other day and I was 30 points slower than the Doc had claimed. Quite a lot. And the change would happen gradually, not immediately, so would you guess maybe 6 wks on my new trial regimen?

There is absolutely no danger of swine flu in desiccated porcine thyroid hormones. They are processed and purified and viruses can not survive in them.

Wow, are you ever on the ball! Thanks.

And I forgot to say, substituting a cinnamon cap last night for one of my metformins gave me exactly the same morning b.g., about 65. So this morning I did it again, took only one metformin and one cinnamon. Will see what my reading is in the morning. I thought for sure someone was going to tell me not to experiment like that without consulting a doctor, but I'm amazed how much better I've felt today!
