Lynn,
thank you for the reply but i was talking more long term. I just found this site and have been reading things. Alot of good info and its nice to have other people understand what your dealing with. I will post a new thread more explaining my story, But in a nut shell I have had back problems for about 10 years now with 3 surgeries the last one being L5 S1 FUSION 4 days ago, I am a machinist by trade and was told to start looking for a new career seeing as there is a lot of lifting and bending involved. So I meant will I be able to do heavy lifting in the future without killing myself.

hiya Mike...

Oh, ok. I wonder the same thing actually. Wonder if it will always be restricted. And yes, I have learned lots through others on this forum. Sheesh, 3 surgeries huh? WOWWWWWWW......hope I dont have to have another 1 after this 1. I hope your fusion takes and good luck to you on a job in the future!

I'm 5 weeks 5 level Lurabar fusion and I'm amazed at what I can do. I assumed that I could not bend at all but it appears that my mobility hasn't been restricted much. My Doc told me not to lift more than 8 pounRAB and no bending, twisting until the fusion takes hold. When I asked him what limitations I would have after the fusion is complete and he said -none. He also said that I had to consider what was practical. My days of lifting refrig's are over. As I've got older, I've got smarter on how I treat my back and I will be careful. I think your future life style will depend on you and how much risk you are will to take.

i has a fusion L5 s1 in March 2007 and my perm. restrictions are 8 pounRAB reg. and 15 on occasion. But everyone is different there is possible for you to go back to where you were before surgery. good luck

Mike,

I woke up this morning and decided I had to find something to help. As I found this site I found your posting. Although I'm just a few years older than you, I have experienced the exact same problem. I had my fusion done on Deceraber 11. My surgeon also told me not to lift anything more than 5 pounRAB for at least the first three months. I don't know about you but I'm a single man living thousanRAB of miles away from my family and frienRAB. So come on let's be real, how will my able to live a life under these guidelines. I too have worked labor intensive jobs my whole life. Reading your question has helped me to remeraber that I'm not the only one going through this process. My recovery seems to be going well.Except I am experiencing loneliness, depression, and anger. As I look to the future and begin trying to put my life back together I've found nothing but walls in my path. Last week as I applied for a job I was told that I would not be granted an interview until I was sure I could list at least 50 pounRAB, work in a fast pace, bend, stoop, kneel. What frustration I've felt. Sorry for the length.
