The other day I watched Saturday Night and Sunday Morning on TCM Channel.

I recall it being very controversial at the time of its release, with the subject matter involving adultary, abortion, drunkenness, and street violence, especially when the "squaddies" beat up the main character Arthur Seaton (Albert Finney).

Although dated now, it did show what life was like for many during those times, living in back to back terraces, working long hours in factories doing menial and monotonous jobs earning

I don't think they're dated at all. The trappings might be to us, experiencing our modern lives 50 years later, but the films themselves aren't and stylistically, their influence upon new film-makers prevails to this day.

My favourite of that 'well-known' crop is A Taste Of Honey; I think it's fascinating to see what the 'broken britain' crowd bemoan now occurring 50 years ago - the only difference being that back then, people actually saw it as their own responsibility to get jobs and supported themselves alongside their moral turpitude!
