LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- FOX isn't done with "King of the Hill" just yet.

Network and studio sources have confirmed that between two and six installments of the series will serve as its official swan song next season.

The news marks the latest chapter in the show's tumultuous golden years. Originally capped at 202 episodes - "Lucky's Wedding Suit," the last episode produced during said run was conceived at the time as a series finale - FOX subsequently ordered two additional 20-episode production cycles (BABE and CABE) before asking for a final lap of 13 episodes (DABE) in April of 2008.

FOX will have aired 253 of the 255 total episodes after its current 13th season wraps on May 17, leaving two still yet to air.

It's understood however that producer 20th Century Fox Television kept the show in production for four additional episodes (DABE14-DABE17) bringing its actual total to 259.

The network nevertheless has yet to license those extra episodes, meaning as few as two or as many as six could air next season. Regardless, all of the completed installments will definitely turn up on DVD.

Considering we can't get season 7 on DVD due to low sales, I don't think that'll be happening.

This whole thing is strange, though. Six episodes? Really?

Perhaps they're keeping the show on a short lifeline in case they feel like bringing it back full time, considering Sit Down, Shut Up has practically bombed and is being buried, while The Cleveland Show doesn't seem to have a lot of hope placed into it. Seriously, where are the advertisements for it?

Wow, just when I think that the series is ending, they keep finding new ways to bring it back. 2-6 new episodes I see, I wonder what they'll do that they'll considered their "Swan Song" episodes they speak of.

That would not be as easy as the Powerpuff Girls set was. 258 shows is quite a lot more than 78.

In fact, that job might be even too large for Time Life.

That and the fact Cleveland Show was given a second season deal already. They aren't going to go cheap with promotions for this show. They're just waiting for the right time to do it which would be you know closer to fall. Excpet a lot of promotion starting around August and even more so in September when I assume the season will start.

I do think that these last six eps will be the last 6 KOTHs made (with Mike Judge busy on other projects and such) but you never know espically with how FOX keeps seeming to want to slightly bring KOTH back sometimes for more eps in they're own sort of weird way.

I hope KH has a good ending, its one of the Few animated Sitcoms that has stayed consisitant in quality over the years. It will be sad to see it go. But I guess its batter to have it end now while it still has some pride, then end up like simpsons.

Good to see at least ONE case of seeing when a show's falling into the same trap as Simpsons, even if Fox refuses to accept that Simpsons is past its prime.

And "not a lot of hope?" Umm, they've already signed a two season deal when the show, which doesn't look terribly appealing (IMHO) hasn't even premiered yet. If you ask me, that's putting too much hope into it.
