King Kong vs. King Kong

Hello.

I'm new here so apologies if this has been covered already.

Just interested in how people rate the new King Kong film against the original. Obviously the effects are better, but which is the more powerful + moving film?

I haven't watched the new version, so perhaps I can't make a judgement.
But the first film I found to be very moving when King Kong gets shot off The Empire State Building.
I cried when I first saw it and subsequent viewings have been emotional for me too.
I know its not real, but the emotional attachment between human and ape, was lovely.
I'm just a big softy really.

Oh the remake is unquestionably the better movie.

The effects are obviously better than the original, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. I don't care what anyone says, I'm not a huge supporter of excessive CGI, but this CGI is brilliant and awe-inspiring, it brings the movie to life.

It has better cinematography, Skull Island now feels like a gloomy and foreboding place. It has better acting. Kong actually looks like a 25ft gorilla and the effort into making him was tremendous (including the skills of Andy Serkis studying gorilla movement). I liked the tender Kong/Anne moments whereas in the original she was scared of him. I liked how once she tamed him, he became her guardian on the Island. There's some powerful moments such as Kong and Anne on the frozen lake and Anne desparetely trying to save Kong atop the Empire State Building.

There's better moments that are gripping and exhilirating, including the dino stampede, the T-rex vs. Kong battle in the vines which is impressively realised. The insect pit that was cut and lost from the original has been re-created in specatacular and creepy glory.

Let's just say this. If you want top awesome, un-faulted, flawless entertainment, watch the new version. If you want to appear 'smart' and falsely feel you have superior taste in movies because you like the old 'classics' watch the original. But you can bet money you won't have as good a time than with the remake...

Not wanting to appear 'smart' but lets wait a few years and then compare the one overdosing on eye candy for the MTV generation and the one with heart. A seventy year old film must have something going for it to be still viewed and loved.
Rest assured King Kong 2005 is not a 'classic' and nobody will be accused of having superior taste for liking it in the future.

Well I haven't watched the original properly, I've only seen clips, but there is no debate over the special effects anyway; it's clear that the 2005 film is better in that respect.

I can't make a comparison; but I would disagree with the view that King Kong 2005 has no 'heart'. I loved the film and found it so incredibly moving. I thought it was just amazing. The special effects were fantastic, yes, but it was more than that.

I never cry in public, I rarely cry over films. Imagine my horror at finding myself sobbing uncontrollably in a packed cinema whilst watching the new Kong a few weeks ago. My Husband didn't know what to do with me. I even cried most of the way home and even welled up when telling frienRAB about it the next day. Rest assured, Kong 05 has a big heart.

I agree, it does have heart, probably more so than the original actually. Where's the heart in the original if Anne is completely terrified of Kong all the way through?

Ive not seen the new one yet even though i had been so looking forward to it...dam!

I think the first ever kong film will always be good as the effects in it then were impressive even though now they look very dated.

What im interested in is peoples views on the other remake which starred Jessica Lange and Beau Bridges, as i really liked that, in fact i thought that kong was so realistic i really did break my heart crying when he died in it. The thing is the press really slated it, and now no-one hardly ever mentions it and im not sure why?

Have to agree, Kong getting shot is very moving
I still wish that some how he survived, but then I suppose we wouldnt feel for Kong in the same way.
