Kinect - Old Xbox 360 Arcade?

I don't use Live, and my Xbox can't go online, full stop.
Apparently the Kinect requires an Xbox firmware update to use.
I have the ancient green interface on my Xbox.
Does the Kinect REALLY need a software update or can it be used with the old s/w?

P.s. Any way I can update my s/w without connecting it to Live? =]
