Welcome all the help I can get please any incite would be great! You see, I currently am serving in Iraq (Kirkuk to be exact) and, this deployment has giving me the financial means to buy many new toys when I return. Right before I left I got in a bad car wreck. Long story short bought a 2007 bmw M3 outright. Now I had a few bikes in the past (largest being a 99' gsxr750) but I have always craved a ducati super bike anything. 916, 996, 998, 999 etc. I never had the financial means. What is your guy’s opinion on this? The bike is going to be used on a daily bases for I love to ride, and I live in Oahu, Hawaii where riding all year is wonderful. Well what do you guys think? I think by sheer looks alone this bike is one of the best ever built! (Besides the Desmosedici RR way out of my league). But do to age, (23) only about 3 years riding, and honestly some what intimidated by the sheer power offered by this awesome machine I am kind of "on the fence". My heart says YES BUY. My wife says... maybe you should buy an older r1. Lol. Please help!

Nothing holds value like Duc's so, like CAG said, you can always sell it if you decide its not for you.
That said, with three years of riding under your belt, the main consideration as to wether or not a bike of that size is appropriate for you right now would be; how disciplined are you?
I myself am in the early stages of my military career (AF Officer) so, I know the level of discipline you have been taught. I would say that if you are willing to control yourself for the first few months of ownership and not flog the shit out of it every time some jackass yells, "GET ON IT!" or "DO A WHEELIE!", you should be fine. Those kinds of antics are innevitably what gets inexperienced riders hurt.
Also, unless you are a racer or a guys who loves unnecessary components, you would be best served to get the standard model. Same horsepower and looks, but less price and more comfortable suspension for the street.
Bottom line, there has never been a better reason to own a Ducati.

As well as investing in the 1098, can I recommend investing in some advanced rider training. I'm a firm believer in one course = a summer of riding, in regard to the potential to improve your riding and therefore truly enjoying your new Duke. OK, I'm biased as I'm an instructor...

The 1098 is ludicrously easy to ride in comparison to a GSXR750 (IMHO). Get the Duc, you won't loose much on it but it's sooooo good. You can ride it how you want, just because the power is there you don't have to use it, the torque and delivery are so sweet in comparison to a high revving in line 4 cyclinder bike that you will be bale to take it as easy or as mad as you want.

I cut my teeth on a brand spankers 04 zx6r, the maddest 600 that year and swapped it in 4 months later for a '97 916 senna. Reason being it felt more stable at high speeds, superb low rev grunt and of course a boyhood dream!!. The duke is so much better as a first bike i think as the power is very usable ie you dont need to thrash it to get the best of it. The duke is the way togoif you can afford it.... you wont regret it!!!
