kind of a dumb question but how do you put a 1989 ford bronco 2 in 4x4?

my bronco wont shift into 4x4 or something i push the button but nothing is there a certain way you have to do it. it was working last winter when my dad would drive it a little and now i finally got my license and its mine but i cant seem to get it to go in 4x4 i dont see how it would just stop working cuz basically all it did was sit in the driveway. thank you
