A Tunisian opposition leader critical of the country's Islamist-led government has died after being shot Wednesday outside his home in the capital, Tunis.Chokri Belaid was a leading member of the opposition Popular Front. Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali called his death a crime against Tunisia.
More than 1,000 protesters gathered outside the interior ministry in Tunis to denounce Belaid's killing and chant against the Ennahda party that leads the government.
The site is the same place where anti-government protests began two years ago, eventually toppling the country's leader and launching the wave of Arab Spring protests across the Middle East and North Africa.
Tunisian President Moncef Markouzi canceled his planned trip to a summit in Cairo because of the killing.
