Kids Without Cable Have It Bad

Maybe this has been discussed before, but I just thought of it. Kids without cable have it bad these days. All they have is PBS on weekdays and 4Kids on weekends. wow.

Once you've gotten your digital cable with 200 channels, Hi-definition, and OnDemand, it's hard to imagine that anyone in the world doesn't have them, and harder still to imagine someone who doesn't have cable at all. I often forget that I didn't have Cartoon Network for a long time, and really wanted it. Really something to think about.

Don't they also I have Kewlopolis and, Qubo? (not like those 2 are worth watching but still...)

Maybe it's just me but I've gotten more enjoyment out of watching 4Kids TV and, Kids'WB than I have on CN, Disney/JETIX, and Nick these past few years. Aside from Transformers, I don't really like any of CN's recent stuff and, I pretty much can't stand any of Disney's or Nick's stuff anymore and the shows I did like from them are overplayed.

Besides I can watch most of the stuff on CN, Nick, and Disney everyday, while 4Kids TV, and Kids'WB!/CW4Kids can only be watched once a week. So thats where its at for me.

I'd say kid tv in general is worse these days than back in the day. However, kids don't notice. Just like many of us didn't notice Power Rangers was actually crap. The point is that kids without cable don't have options these days. Back in the day you had Fox, WB, CBS, ABC, Disney Afternoon, and PBS. As well as COUNTLESS syndication channels. But these days you only have two options.

Maybe if the FCC hadn't put so many stipulations on childrens' television to the point where the networks found it unprofitable, we wouldn't have such a problem with free television. Once again the government tries to help the children and it makes them worse off.

It's a lose-lose for networks. These days they air programs for adults. But adults are either at work or doing stuff around the house. So, the ratings aren't really all that impressive. Atleast with kids stuff they got some great ratings which meant that advertisers were willing to buy spots.

Yeah I know. I feel sorry for these poor children. All they have are lame shows Saturday morings and preschool shows on PBS (they aren't that bad if you are in preschool)

Actually, not having cable isn't TOO bad. *doesn't have it nor uses it much when it's available* It's just finding other avenues, don't make cable it and only it for animation.

Actually I find that kids sans cable tend to appreciate the cartoons that they can watch moreso than those that do. Having cartoons on constantly and not being able to look forward to the weekday afternoon or Saturday morning isn't all it's cracked up to be. I'm sure they get sick of seeing the same damn FOP show three times in the same week on digital.

I know that feeling of cable loss. As someone who hasn't had cable for nearly eight years now (though I had it for one year in-between before durn Comcast took it away, that or my parents secretly canceled it behind my back), it was kind of disheartening to be away from Nickelodeon/Cartoon Network that I grew up with as a child, when I did have cable for years on end.

Fortunately I don't watch as much TV as I used to and even if I wanted cable back, I'm old enough to get one meself, I just lack the time and effort. :D

Pretty much sums up my opinion on this. These days, I watch more animation on broadcast then I do on cable. I subscribed to cable a few years ago and have been largely dissapointed, with a few exceptions. In fact, I plan to drop my cable services within the month. So, I honestly feel that kids who don't have cable aren't missing much.

We had cable when I was a kid, but I only stuck with a few random channels, anyway (Disney and whatever channel She-Ra, etc. was on :p ). However, I didn't even have Cartoon Network until around high school (maybe 8th grade), and for a long time I lost Disney and only got to see it when they were running one of their free promotions. So, I survived but I probably missed out on some really neat shows.

See, I think my only thing about "poor kids who don't have cable" is they're losing out on the "nostalgia" factor. So, in 10 or 20 years they're going to be hearing their friends or co-workers chatting about a show they enjoyed as kids and they'll feel completely left out, or lament the fact they didn't see it as it originally aired - OK, that's probably just myself  Yeah, probably just myself. With DVDs and the like available these days it's not so much an issue.
