Kids' WB! on the CW Talkback: "World of Quest" - Season One (SPOILERS)

I've seen three half-hours so far, and I still can't decide whether I like or dislike it. The mixing of sci-fi and feudal-adventure elements is pretty interesting, as are the character designs (though I would have liked if they'd used designs from the original graphic novel), but a lot of the times the humor seems a little dry and some of the episodes (at least the ones I've seen) are a bit formulaic.

Actually, that character is Anna Maht, who is voiced by Krystal Meadows. Melissa Altro voices Way, the alien-looking female that is the group's guide.

It turns out the series began as a webcomic, which you can read for free here:

Pretty darn good. The art does have a Calvin and Hobbes influence, especially on the design of the prince. Have to say I like the TV series' character designs a bit better, but the comic is excellent.

I don't know why I get such a kick when the prince gets slammed around in the show. I guess it might be because at least in his case, he deserves it, at least a little. So refreshing after seeing innocent characters treated cruelly for a laugh (except that the laugh is never there) on other shows...anyway, oddly enough, the slapstick he receives actually makes the prince more likeable. I'm enjoying this show so far. Hope it makes it to a second season...

Just wanted to add that I agree about the writing on the show. It does, all too often, use formulaic jokes rather than original humor. I wonder - where do toon producers get their writers anyway? And can't they tell a weak script from a good one? I wonder if they just shrug and say, "Ah, it's for kids...they've never heard these jokes before, and they're not that fussy anyway."

Sigh...World of Quest is intriguing, and has possibilities, but without stronger scripting, I'm afraid it'll quickly fade.

Well, she was in Crockadoodle Doo and the one where they all fight in the arena. She's a cool character, although she looks a lot like Upgrade from Ben 10. In fact, several of the characters in WoQ look derivative: there's a black guy cyborg who looks like Cyborg from Teen Titans, and the apprentice wizard looks a little like Katara from Avatar and a little like the lead female from Disney's Atlantis. But despite its obvious influences, the show is still a lot of fun, one of the most enjoyable toons on TV right now. I'm rapidly becoming a devoted fan (in fact I spent some time this evening watching WoQ videos off the web). My favorite characters are Prince Nestor (he's got a great voice actor who give the character a certain likeable quality that saves him from total brattiness, plus he's a great fall guy), and Graer the griffin (love his design).

Hmmm...maybe the series won't even finish out its original 13 eps on the WB?

Anyway, I've liked only 2 eps of this so far...the first one (with some reservations), the one about Nestor getting turned into stone and the one where Quest got small. But all the others have been pretty disappointing. I wonder if part of the problem is the comic the series is based on. The hate/hate relationship between Quest and Nestor kind of works in the comic, because one-note gags generally do in that medium. But in a series, where the characters are moving, have voices and thus seem far more real, that kind of thing grates pretty quickly. Again, what a pity that a series with so much potential has been squandered. :(
