Kids and hiking/camping?

I am a single father of a 5 year old boy who has never been camping and has only hiked a couple of 1 mile long trails. As all 5 year old boys, he tends to lose interest quickly if not constantly entertained. He will go out with me simply because he wants to hang out with his dad, but I don't want to ruin his first few experiences of the great outdoors. When he gets older I want to be able to enjoy this activity with him. I want to get my son interested in hiking and camping early if possible. What kind of activities have others done to peek and keep their young children interested in these activities.
 
my father used to and he still tells me the amazing experience he had as a kid.Maybe if you can generate kid's interest and mix up with yours then you can have great time together.Mixed well for me.
