Not to mention the fact that both Volumes of Kill Bill were rated 18.
I saw it yesterday, and having read the comic book, I don't feel like my opinion on the film is as objective as it could be. I kept thinking about how things that worked well in the comic book (like the narration) didn't come across as necessary in the film.
But they got a ton of things right. Changing the reaction of Katie, the motivation of Big Daddy, the reveal of Red Mist, or the resolution of Dave being found stabbed in his costume were changes that were definitely needed.
But there were problems that went beyond what they left out. Stuff that was added -- weird mouth hole in KA's mask aside -- like the jet pack, or the ridiculous nature of Hit-Girl's kills (which were, shockingly, more believable in the comic book; wielding a katana? Sure. But catching gun magazines in the air, like this is Wanted? Or kicking adults to the ground? No ****ing way.)
And that would've been alright if the film had acknowledged the impossibility of it. It's like, in Wanted, they say how it's an ability of sorts. It's superhuman. But in Kick-Ass, the only surprise seems to be her age.
And AGAIN, this would've been more acceptable if the film could decide on a tone. To go from the realism of Dave being stabbed, to the slapstick comedy of a guy being shot with a bazooka, blown up in a microwave, or dancing to Crazy in the car was jarring to me. It could've been what Watchmen (the film) tried, but on a smaller scale, but instead it veers from one genre to the next.
But the action was very good. I wish we'd seen more of Big Daddy in action -- his scene in the warehouse was stunning to watch. I don't even need to say how good Nicolas Cage was in this. And Hit-Girl's first meeting with Dave was fun, too.
Big Daddy's death confused me a bit (the singing/shouting), and him being burned to death at the same time kinda made it less serious for me. I was still sad, though. But if they had gone with the climax of the book, we would've gotten that lovely denouement at the graveyard, and an axe through the head instead of a rocket launcher.
I'm not sure how I feel about Red Mist. Despite how long the film was, we didn't get as much time with his character as I would've liked. And Kick-Ass himself kinda lacked something, I thought. I'll be interested to see what happens with the sequel.
Still, I'd recommend it. But because everyone else seems to love it, maybe read the comic book afterward.
ETA: Clark Duke is gold. That is all.
