Kick-Ass could be the greatest film in the universe, but the Daily Mail were bound to try and create some faux outrage about it simply because it's written by Jonathan Ross's wife.
And I'm on about the new version, 'My FrienRAB Tigger & Pooh, which, I'm sure you'll find, is an American programme. As was 'The New Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh', which premiered some 22 years ago.
I was fairly underwhelmed too, and was struggling to put a finger on why I was a bit bored at times. The best I could come up with is that it's too referrential. The whole raison d'etre seems to be commenting on other superhero movies. It's as if it never quite had the guts to be a superhero movie in its own right.
I have to say (while despising everything the Daily Mail stanRAB for), I think in many ways this was cyncial filmmaking. It was designed to appeal to fanboys and geeks, deliberately trying to gleefully shock cos the core audience would lap it up. To give Vaughn his credit, he does know his audience! It may be as simple as I'm not the core audience here.
Motivations didn't seem to make a whole lot of sense - the girlfriend was brattish one minute, the next she was altruistic and interested in him cos she thought he was gay based on no evidence, which seemed especially weak (not to say shallow). It felt like a cheap gag to drive the plot forward. The action scenes were very well executed (pardon the pun), but often felt derivative and suffered the ubiquitous problem of good guy / gal kills everyone and escaping unscathed despite everyone else firing at them at point blank range. I know it's a well-worn movie trick, but it's kinda old in this day and age - I need a bit of originality in there. Minor spoiler:
The night vision scene was much more effective, if slightly disturbing with the video game aesthetic.
There were a handful of good lines, and one great / notorious character - Hit Girl. Without her, this would have barely registered on the radar. I guess that's why it felt cynical - by playing with some some genuine taboos (in a world with precious few left), it creates box office potency. It could be argued "what's wrong with that... all action cinema is cynical". I guess so, it's just I didn't find the premise or characters that interesting.
Perhaps I'm being unduly harsh because of the lavish praise (I don't use the word hype - the praise seems genuine). It's got a lot of plus points, and huge kudos to pulling of a British independent with such flair and craft. But in the end, for one who is by now very very bored of superhero movies in general, it left me cold.
Me too, just looks like some fun escapism. Soundtrack doesn't sound bad either. I love the bit in the trailer where one of them jumps off a dumpster, lanRAB awkwardly and says "agh my leg!".
Add me to the list of people that wasn't blown away by the film. Unlike Noiseboy I don't remember getting bored by the film but I just couldn't get into it. I think it's interesting how many people have used the word "hilarious" and said "laugh out loud moments" on this thread. I didn't laugh once and I think the best that my screening mannaged was two maybe three sniggers.
I would say that it's possible that the audience wasn't the sort that would like these films but here were a good cross section of male and female and of all ages including a couple that I think were underage and sneaked in. The film just didn't seen to connect with them by the dead reaction. As I say no laughing, no grimacing or saying "ouch" etc to the action sequences. You could easily have thought we were watching a courtroom drama.
The film had the right idea and started off well but IMO totally collapsed once Hit Girl appeared on the screen. It blew the premise of the film away and made the film a pointless run-of-the-mill action film that's been done time and time again.
In the comicbook store the main character (not good less than 24 hours later I can't remember his name) says about why there aren't any superheroes. As his frienRAB rightly point out because they have superpowers.
So the story moves on and Kick-Ass is created. Despite the stupid getting run over sequence it was still holding it's own and working as a story when he saves the guy from a beating. It was real. He wasn't leaping about etc. Just standing his ground using two sticks/batons and not being great at that so taking a beating at times as well.
The film goes on and enter Hit Girl. lt all goes wrong from there as far as the premise of the film goes. She was leaping around all over the place. Had pinpoint accuracy etc. It got even worse in the final showdown.
The idea of the film didn't need her or Big Daddy to work. Maybe that's why I started to lose interest and connection of the film when she was on the screen.
It also didnt help that we once again had the slow motion action scences which is another thing that has been overused and is becoming tiresome for me. I find these shots make a film even less believable for me than if it had all been shot in realtime.
It was an ok film. I would give it 6/10
I thought the film was about Hit Girl but it seems not, anyway it looks pretty terrific and was written by a Brit from her own comic. Brad Pitt helped finance it too. If you can stand bad language watch the rude version, the Batman joke had me in stitches.
I bet the DM are outraged about because of Hit-Girl too (she's younger than the films intended audience - I think). Wont somebody think of the children!!
She looks like a cross between Gogo from Kill Bill and Stephanie from Lazy Town
I used to love that But I think stvn means they see Pooh in the books as "English" though Sterling Holloway IS Pooh for me (Jim Cummings is good too).
The Book of Pooh was OK I thought.
fanastic film and will definately buy it on bd.if this was a tarantino movie the film world would be sucking his dick over it but its not its a british director and i think we should give credit where its duehes done a fantastic job.really liked layer cake and id read the book bout 4 years before the film came out but this is a whole new level for vaughn.if he doesnt get a blockbuster to direct after this there is no justice.and i thought he was just the producer mate of guy ritchie lol but he's blown him away with this
According to this report from JoBlo.com the UK is getting the new trailer for Scott Pilgrim before Kick Ass and I didnt know that Kick Ass is released in the UK 2 weeks before the US:
"Want to be one of the first people in the world to see the trailer for SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD? Then get your ass on a plane and fly to the UK (or if you're already in the UK just get on the Tube and head to your local theater). The 83-second teaser will run before prints of KICK-ASS this Friday. But wait, KICK-ASS doesn't open until April, you're saying to yourself. That's here in the US (duh, you've got to be more globally aware...) but it opens this Friday in the UK. And will have a two-week jump on the US theatrical premiere.
But what about the rest of the world (and not the world that Scott Pilgrim is fighting)? I've heard rumors that the trailer will debut online around the same time that it debuts in front of KICK-ASS in London. When and where? Don't have exact specifications just but as soon as it's announced I'll let you know. For the meanwhile, I'll let you head over to your favorite travel planning site so you can start booking your flights. Try Virgin Atlantic. I heard they have these fancy little seats with dividing walls and they bring you pajamas and tuck you in at night"
"her"? hit girl or the writer? as the writer in male...
It looks like a typical Millar project in my opinion. Something that is ok, but not great, yet is hyped beyond belief by certain people, mainly due to them worshipping the ground Millar walks on.
What a fantastic movie!
A great mix of action, comedy and drama. Loved the soundtrack too.
Chloe Moretz I thought stole the show, she was great as Hit Girl.
Oh and wtf was that critic in the Daily Mail babbling on about? Did he forget he was writing a film review and a not a parliament review on crime? Jezzzuz, yeah the film was violent, so what an 11 year old used bad language and was seen using guns and knives. It was a film for RAB!!!
If kiRAB were to copy it then that's the parents fault for allowing them to watch a film not suitable for them. If there over 15 and they copy the violence and use knifes or guns then they've got a serious screw loose and need help!
Plus his rant about Hit Girl was totally unneccessary. Its people like that who turn an innocent image into something taboo. Again, if a person over the age of 16 was turned on by seeing Hit Girl in a school uniform then they got serious issues!
