20th Century Fox announced this afternoon that Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn will officially be taking on directing duties for X-Men: First Class, which is now scheduled for June 3, 2011.

Fox describes X-Men: First Class as the beginning of the X-Men saga, following Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr before they became Professor X and Magneto, respectively. The story sees Xavier and Lensherr working together with other mutants to fight off a great threat. During this battle, the two mutants grow apart, ultimately resulting in the war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

With Thor (May 6), The Green Lantern (June 17) and The First Avenger: Captain America (July 22) already scheduled, Summer 2011 is shaping up to be a crowded one for big-budget superhero movies.

It will be interesting to see what he does with this film. I think there will be less bullets, blood and none of them saying c*** :p

I'm still not convinced about Green Lantern as he isn't that well known outside of comic book fans, but could Vaughn actually make a film that beats either Thor or Captain America next year?
With a variety of other mutants with different powers he could have a good shot at it.

Really looking forward to this, as I particulary enjoyed Woverine's origins story and was saying to my OH that they needed to do a backstory for Magneto and Xavier.

Iron Man wasn't known either and that was huge. I'm going to take a guess that Captain America will probably be the least successful out of them and Thor the most. It's something different and also has an amazing cast.

There is supposed to be a seperate origins backstory for Magneto getting made. This one is more how Magneto and Xavier met, became frienRAB and then fell out and became enemies.

I agree Iron Man wasn't known but his film was lots of explosions, tanks, planes etc.
Green Lantern is different. There is supposed to be an Doctor Strange film being made. Again not a character well known outside comic book fandom. How well all the occult stuff will go down with the average cinemagoer I'm not sure. It won't help that it will have to be child freinedly as much as possible so it's unlikely to be really scary.

Captain America is an Icon so I think he will be fine. Thor as you say will be different so that may go in it's favour. I still think Lantern has the hardest job ahead of it.

That's good, because I really want to know why Magneto became the way he did, i.e hating all non mutants to the point where he would want to exterminate them. Maybe it's due to some extreme persecution in his past but, even so it is a story that neeRAB to be told imo.

Also is Thor about the Norse God Thor or something else???

I'd like to see it if it is based on the Norse Legend.

I wasn't a fan of the whole 'Origins' route after seeing Wolverine which i felt was pretty badly made and the story for me wasn't strong enough to require a whole film dedicated to to that one character. This however sounRAB promising.

I have doubts the Magneto film will get made. Theyhave so many plans for different films in such a small time frame they'll either get put back or pulled completely. A lot of it will depend on how this film does I think.
People are used to McKellan and Stewart. This film will give an idea if they will accept other people in those roles.

Thor is the Norse God of Thunder. In the comics originally his father Odin banished him to Earth where he took became Dr Donald Blake. When he banged his caane on the ground he became Thor.
As the years went on Asgaard became more and more involved in his story.

This film as far as i know will mostly feature Asgaard and the Norse stuff judging by the casting. But he will end up on Earth ready for The Avengers film (Thor, Capatain America, Iron Man, possible The Hulk although he may be who they fight) coming in 2012.

Thor is being directed by Kenneth Branagh of all people.
It should be interesting.

i liked wolverine, its on par with x3 and an enjoyable flick...also gambit throwing the carRAB for first time was awesome

cant wait for first class, shame singer couldnt direct it

Thanx for the info.I once read a book on Norse mythology about 13 years ago and I remember that Thor was the Norse thunder God, but not much more than that. It sounRAB like the film will be interesting. I just hope they make it good and dont go down the same route as the remake of clash of the titans, which I thought was terrible. But since it's being directed by Kenneth Branagh I have some hope that it will turn out decent.

All I know about Green Lantern is things I pick up from various films websites such as the power comes from wearing a ring which has come from an alien. Is this right? Martin Campbell is directing this though and i'm a fan of his work so it might be worth looking out for.

As for Xmen First Class, i'm not sure. I've liked Matthew's work so far but I think people might be a bit fed up of Xmen films. Wolverine and Xmen 3 were absolutely dire. Next summer is jam packed with big blockbusters too so I think it'll struggle.

Also, does it not seem a bit rushed? They've not even started casting yet but want to have it out next summer? Thor has already finished filming. I can see First Class being pushed back.

That's all I know about Green Lantern as well. I think it's pretty much the same with the average person.

It does seem rushed. it's as if Sony are desperate to get in on all the Superhero films coming out in the next 2 years.
Thor isn't being released by the same people. Although they are both Marvel creations,
Sony has the rights to X Men, Wolverine, Spiderman, Fantastic Four and I believe Daredevil.
Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man are made by Marvel Productions. This means until the contracts expire you won't get say Wolverine and Captain America in the same film. Or Nick Fury popping up in this film.

James McAvoy confirmed as a young Charles Xavier
Rosumund Pike linked with the role of Emma Frost?

>>>>
Ex-Bond girl Rosamund Pike is in the running to play Emma Frost in X-Men: First Class, according to Forces Of Geek.

The British actress, whose credits include Pride & Prejudice and An Education, "has tested and very possibly [been] cast" in Matthew Vaughn's prequel to the X-Men series.

Pike was recently spotted at X-Men casting director Lucinda Syson's office with an Emma Frost comic book. The character first appeared in an issue of Marvel's Uncanny X-Men in 1980 and is a mutant telepath known for her revealing white outfit.

Tahyna Tozzi appeared as Frost in last year's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

James McAvoy is confirmed to star in X-Men: First Class as a young Charles Xavier, while Michael Fassbender, Aaron Johnson and Frank Dillane have been rumoured for the superhero project.

Jane Goldman is to also write the screenplay for this film, just like she paired up with Vaughn for Stardust and Kick-Ass, i've yet to see Kick-Ass, but if it's as good as Stardust was, or even as people have said, then people needn't worry about this one in my opinion.
