Ken Russell's The Devils coming in May R1

I remember seeing this way back as a double header in the Warner West End with A Clockwork Orange. They weren't on the same bill, just in the cinema next door, The Warner Rendezvous. I remember being stunned by both films, but I was only fourteen at the time and had made a train journey up from the depths of Kent just to see them. Wasn't sure I'd get in, them both being X's an all. But I did. And for years I raved about them both to my mates back home, none of whom had seen them. Then years later the Devils finally made it to Canterbury and I went to see it again. I was shocked at how rubbish it was. Badly made, badly acted and just plain silly. It was equally disappointing when a friend brought me back a tape of A Clockwork Orange from the US and I realised that was pretty crap too.

It would be nice to see The Devils again just to see what I think of it now. Still am disappointed with A Clockwork Orange, so I don't hold out much hope. Still, ya never know.

ARRRRRGGGGHHHHH

Why is this film still such a sticking point?
It is one of the best designed films ever, The direction is fantastic, Russells best film. The performances of everyone involved are great, totally ott and understated at the same time without being unbelievable.
If Mark Kermode had any pull in the DVD world this would have been released a long time ago! OK it is not every ones cup of tea and some will hate the film, It does have moments when it feels dated, The sex scenes are over hyped and are only a visual re enforcement of the tension and hysteria that has built in the film to this point, its not an hour and half porn film which is how it could be perceived. If channel 4 can show it (though they did not reinstate the cuts which had been shown on the programme before!) why no release?

Does anyone know the real reasons for its non release on DVD?
Who does not want it released and what sort of power do they hold?
