Keep dogs away from outdoor plants?

I have a larger breed outdoor dog. I want to plant some small trees and was wondering if there is anything to keep her away from them (not chewing them up) other than a fence.
 
I'm not a big believer in leaving dogs outside, unsupervised. Bring the dog inside, and only have her outside when you can be out there to supervise.
 
maybe put chicken wire and post around them...but be careful as for some plants and trees are toxic to dogs and if the dog by chance does get to them it could make them sick or be lethal.....
 
How do you know she is going to chew them up? The worse thing most dogs will do is pee on it.
I small fence would be best to give a long tree the best chance of making it.
