I have a '97 Vulcan 750. It starts up fairly easily, and when it idles at start up, it is perfectly normal. The problem is when I go for a ride, it idles ridiculously high. Whenever I pull the clutch in at a stop light, or to shift gears, it automatically revs up to 4k rpm's. I currently have some fuel additive in the tank, but that doesn't seem to be helping. I am pretty mechanically challenged, so I was wondering if there were some quick fixes that wouldn't require much tear down or carb work.

thanks
oh yeah, forgot to mention....The choke is not on, and the throttle is not stuck open.

Check if you're leaving the choke on, then check the idle adjustment knob. It's that black plastic knob near the carbs. You could have a vacuum leak, but check the basics first. If you're having trouble beyond your skills, take it in. You can't take chances with a bike. I had a Vulcan 750 years ago, and they're pretty reliable. Good choice. Resist the urge to trade up. The Clymer book for that model is very thorough and not expensive.

Not familiar with the bike, but if it has twin carbs balancing them will probably drop the idle speed.
