Before people start shouting which bike I should ride on here is some info that might be helpful?

I have taken the MSF safety course and have my license. This will be my first bike so if anyone would like to suggest any other bikes that might be less dangerous then feel free to do so. Any kind of tip/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am turning 19 this year and am not riding a sport bike due to it being a crotch rocket. I have a few friends who have been riding for more than 4 seasons, and I am not the type that wants to push the limits. I would like to ride the bike to commute here and there, mainly to school, work, and home. I am a very responsible driver/person so I am very careful with my life and others around me.

So now.. what would be a good bike to choose? A ninja 500r or a 650r? I'm a little over 5'6" and am strong enough to lift the bike if it were to fall. From your personal experience what would be a good bike to start out with? I keep hearing that a 500r is a EXCELLENT bike but I might get bored with it, and that the 650r isn't necessarily a good beginner bike. At the same time I hear I'm a responsible enough person to handle a 650r and respect the power that comes along with it.

Now can anyone give me good advice or suggestions? The whole sport bike look is a keeper for me, and I don't mind riding anything that looks uglier than a 500r haha. I'm not the type of person who wants to ride because its so "shiney/fast/chick magnet". So any kind of advice/suggestions/tips would be greatly appreciated! :]
